We do this often. Since Tioga Pass is open in September, we would drive Death Valley, Highway 395 to Tioga Pass (likely stopping at Bowdie Ghost Town if we are with visitors), Tioga Pass, and Yosemite. We like to include Historic Highway 49 in our drive from Yosemite to San Francisco.

It is never too early to book a room at Yosemite.

The car rental places in Las Vegas do not like one way rentals that leave their cars in California.
You could fly to Fresno and rent a car at the airport (FAT) to visit Yosemite. Let's hope that there will be a lot of snow in Yosemite this winter so that the waterfalls will still be flowing well in September.
To get to San Francisco from Fresno, you take a San Joaquin train to Emeryville with a connecting bus over to SF.

Do be aware that Yosemite's waterfalls are usually pretty dry by September - as it usually doesn't rain beyond early May.

Then why do they offer it at such great prices (under 50 bucks per day including all fees, taxes, insurance and collision waiver to Aussies and Brits? )
