After the 8.1 earthquake north of Japan, there was a tsunami threat for Alaska, Hawaii, and the Pacific NW. Was the threat dropped? There were a few 18 inch waves hitting Japan this morning.

yes my dear, just a watch fortunately.. I am on the Kenai peninsula now, but when we lived out in the Aleutians, we were required to go to the tall hill near the community center and wait out other tsunami alerts over a period of years..

**living at the sea level, you need to move fast if you can't remain standing.. and be prepared at any time, day or night, with an emergency bag ready to grab.

Many peopLe had a SEVERE lesson after the Indonesia quake, sadly, but when the water suddenly recedes, that is nature's way of telling everyone to go to high ground ASAP!!

I believe they cancelled the watch for the Washington coast.

We are enjoying a windstorm instead---power out all around (not right here, or I wouldn't be on-line), bridges closed, the usual winter stuff.

I think we had a 16 inch tsunami here. My friend's 8 year old was quaking in his slippers.

I was just on Kauai, so I am really curious how residents are notified of tsunami watches when it is the middle the night? I noticed the watch for the Hawaiian islands was issued around 1 am for a tsunami arrival of 7:20 am. Can someone please enlighten me? Do sirens only blare for a warning? Thanks!

the craziest thing I ever witessed was a forty foot container van blown off a dock into the water and it ended up beached across a bay.. oddly, CNN never sent anyone out there for live reports, they were all hiding in the tavern

I was on Waikiki Beach early this AM, a helicopter was hovering with a loudspeaker trying to get people out of the water. There were cops all over Kuhio Beach Park and TV crews. I assumed it had something to do with sharks! No sirens ever sounded, no big wave but the water did recede with a strong pull around AM, it looked eerie to see the water almost completely empty of people.

There was a tsunami in Cresent City, northern California, yesterday which sank one boat and did some damage to the harbor.

The Crescent City newspaper referred to the phenomenon as a "tidal surge," not a tsunami.

In Hawaii, it was a tidal surge (no wall) of up to five feet. Haleiwa on Oahu's North Shore had five feet surges.

One person in the water at one of the Waikiki beaches was injured when the receding water took her into a break wall.

Some docks were flooded & a few boats had damage.

The tidal surge was described somewhat like a high tide & low tide cycle that normally takes a 6 hour period, taking place in five minutes. It happened about every 1/2 hour for two hours.

Reports also said it was the biggest tidal surge in Hawaii in 40 years.

I've heard this morning a weak tsunami did some damage around Crescent city area and reached Hawaii. No details, it was a running line.

I saw the Crescent City one, referred to as a small tsunami. One boat sunk, and a few other boats as well as a dock damaged.
