Southern Route: About the halfway point between Denver and Interior, S.D. (the southern entrance to the Badlands) is Scottsbluff, NE. There are a number of good hotels there. If you want to get a bit further along the road, there's Alliance, NE, also with a number of good hotels (but fewer than you'll find in Scottsbluff.) Don't expect to find much to see or do in either location, if that's what you are looking for.
Northern Route: There's not much after you pass Cheyenne until you get to Hot Springs, SD. But driving to Hot Springs takes more than 5 hours which may be more than you want to drive. The nice thing about stopping in Hot Springs is that the excellent Mammoth Site is located there which is interesting for both adults and kids. From Hot Springs to the Pinnacles Entrance to the Badlands (located south of Wall) is just about 2 hours.
