day trip or activity near Youngstown or Cleveland

I'll be visiting my elderly mother for a long weekend, and taking my teenage son. We'd like to take a short day trip, or do some activity that we'd all enjoy.

My mother mentioned the Cuyahoga Scenic Railroad, but it's had flood damage and isn't likely to be open yet. The Cleveland Play House season won't have started. We've done Garfield's house. We've done Pymatuning to death.

My mother lives near Warren and Youngstown. An hour's drive is probably the maximum for us to handle.

Please advise!

Cleveland has a great zoo.

Have you been to Mill Creek Park in Youngstown?

Nelson's Ledges SP, between Warren and Cleveland, is really interesting, but is not for the mobility-challenged.

Hi Penel523
How about Put-In-Bay on South Bass Island? You can take a ferry from Port Clinton / Sandusky and once on the island rent a gulf cart or take a tram around. A wonderful summer or fall day!

How about the Football Hall of Fame in Canton, OH. Just make sure it's not Hall of Fame Weekend-its really crowded then.

My bf's parents live in Warren, so we go out there all the time. A silly, must-see attraction is the spillway at Pymatuning Lake, "where the ducks walk on the backs of the fish". Read about it on this site:

Here are my thoughts:

In Cleveland:

- Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
- Great Lakes Science Center
- Tower City Center
- Indians/Browns games
- Westside market
- Take a cruise along the lake

I believe that Pittsburgh is only about an hour away from YNG, but I'm just not sure as to what's there. I did see the Carnegie museum mentioned on Good Morning America this morning, so you might check their website for more info.

Hope this helps!

Have fun!
