Christmas Dinner -- Florida Keys
We're staying on Little Torch Key over the holidays. We've gathered a lot of information on restaurants here and on Chowhound, but we're trying to decide what to do for Christmas dinner. We know it's late for reservations, but we might give it a shot. Any recommendations? We don't mind traveling a bit. It's just the two of us.

I'm sure there are places in Key West. However, I notice that Hawk's Cay has a Christmas Day buffet from noon to four. Price is $35 each.
It'd be a bit of a drive--I believe it's around MM66--but it might be worth a shot. And if you've never seen the complex, it's worth a look.

Well, that must be why they haven't responded to my email request for dinner information. Neither has Hawk's Cay for that matter.
Sounds like we may need to take a chance on Key West or get something at a grocery store when we arrive on Friday. Does anyone know what's near Little Torch Key for groceries? We have an efficiency room.
Thanks!

Once you get past the 7-Mile Bridge, on the south side of Marathon, pickings get pretty slim. If it were me, I'd do any shopping in Marathon.
That said, there's a Winn-Dixie in Big Pine Key, which is about 8 miles south of Little Torch Key. It's the only sizable grocery store I can think of between Marathon and Key West. My personal preference is for Publix (of which there's one in Marathon,) but they're both good chains (though Winn-Dixie is operating in Chapter 11.)
If you have time, consider this: On your way down, stop at Hawk's Cay and check it out. If it doesn't look promising, continue south. You can pick up groceries in Marathon, or simply head down to your lodging and later slip down to Big Pine Key.

Thanks for the shopping tips. When we arrive, it'll be the middle of the night. Our flight arrives in Ft. Lauderdale at around 1:00 AM. We decided to do the drive right away rather than checking into someplace in Ft. Lauderdale for the night. Neither of us sleep very well the first night of a trip, so we figured we'd get the driving out of the way and make up for the sleep in the Keys. We'll have to make the trip during the day on Friday to get groceries, but that'll be fine.
Thanks again for the grocery locations.

This is a letter I received today from Little Palm Island.
Dear Guest,
This hurricane season was exceptionally challenging to all of us in South Florida, and we are certainly happy to see it come to an end. We would like to thank all our valued past guests who called to share their concern and well wishes during the days and weeks following the storm - it was so wonderful to know that you were thinking about us and the Island. I am pleased to report that thanks to the effort of all our staff and support contractors, the Island looks better than ever. We are fully operational and ready for guests. Even the Key Deer are back on the Island and happily eating our new landscaping!
Starting in January, we have made some improvements to our rate structure that we would like to share with you. In 2006, our rates will include a welcome bottle of champagne, full breakfast daily, all non-alcoholic beverages during your visit and all water sport amenities including boat rentals. A Full Meal Plan is also available, and we do have some multi-night packages you may find interesting. Of course, our valued past guests will receive preferred rates throughout the year. If booking online, please use promotional code VIP to see these preferred rates which are available only to our return guests.
We are also excited to share some changes in the Dining Room. Chef Anthony Keene is pleased to announce his new menu, improved wine list and several specialty dining events including Gourmet Night, Full Moon Dinners, Wine Makers events and even a weekly beach barbeque. In addition, SpaTerre is boasting several new experiences sure to please you and your traveling partner.
Please call us at 1-800-3-GET-LOST or click www.littlepalmisland.com for additional information. On behalf of the entire staff, we look forward to hosting you on the Island again soon.
