chicago with kids

Any suggestions for sites to see with small children for 2 days in Chicago? Kids are under 8 years old.

There is so much to do in Chicago! The Shedd Acquarium is very nice. Take them to see SUE at the Field Museum if they love dinosaurs! The Museum of Science and Industry also has a lot of hands-on activities for children to explore. Take them to Navy Pier and rent a quadcycle and go for a spin around the lake. Be sure to stop in and get some popcorn at Garretts - absolutely the best! Also, for quick and reasonable sandwiches and salads, visit the Corner Bakery (their pretzel rolls are out of this world). Hope this helps. Have a great time!

Science & Industry is great. The Coal Mine ride is wonderful at that age. Brookfield Zoo is very nice. It is 12 miles west of downtown.

Don't know when you are coming to Chicago, but if when warmer, take them to the Lincoln Park Zoo (free), Lincoln Park Conservatory (also free), and the Nature Museum (not free but a wonderful place) - especially the indoor butterfly garden.

Navy Pier has the Children's Museum, the Ferris Wheel and the Build-a-Bear store.

Bet they'd enjoy on a ride on the "El" around the loop.

And the Museum of Science and Industry is great for all ages. So much stuff to see and do - the chicks hatching in the incubator, the Coal Mine, the Sub, the space center, etc.

But I bet the one thing they'll really remember above all is a trip up to the observatory of the John Hancock Building. That is something to see for all ages!

Have fun!

There is a new underpass at the Museum of Science and Industry that goes under Lake Shore Drive. It leads to a beach and park area called the Point. Kids like walking on the rocks at Lake Michigan at the Point. You could bring a picnic and blanket and eat at the Point or throw a ball or frizbee around.

All the museum question are great. Aquarium and Museum of History are very near each other which may be convenient.

I highly suggest checking out www.metromix.com. Put in the dates you will be in town and they will tell you everything from festivals to children's theater.

I am from Chicago and think it is one of the best city's.

Mmmmmm, carmel popcorn from Garretts. People stand in line out the door in winter for some of that!

Have a great time.

I agree with visting all the museums in Chicago especially the Field Museum. We also recently went to the Museum of Science and Industry with our 8, 10 year old and thoroughly enjoyed it. We also love Navy Pier when the weather is great. The ferris wheel and boat rides are great. Our favorite stop is Giradelli(?) Ice Cream store near Water Tower for a delicious sundae. Enjoy the city!

Children's Museum on Navy Pier is great! They have a TON of different exhibits, very hands on...have an activity center where kids can creat projects in an organized, small class. It's inexpensive, 7.00/kid...we went there and spent $28.00 and where there ALL DAY you can come and go, you have wristbands on and can go right in. Kids truly love it!

Otherwise, definitley Museum of Science & Industry...think it holds kids attention better than the Field Museum in my opinion.

These are great suggestions. Keep in mind, though, that they are spread out (Museum of Science and Industry, which can be overwhelming, is on South Side, in Hyde Park; Lincoln Park is north of the main downtown area). My 12-year-old son loved taking buses and trains around the city, but little ones may get tired. The Shedd Aquarium (great) and the Field Museum are within walking distance of each other (planetarium is there too, but I'm not a fan). Lincoln Park Zoo would be a good alternative to shlepping to Brookfield, though I like Brookfield. Food counts, too: if your kids like pizza, you might see how they like the city's famous deep-dish pizza; there are plenty of places. Water Tower Place shopping center on Michigan Avenue has a large food court--my son found lots of good choices. The ferris wheel on Navy Pier is fun; I think you could pass up the Hancock Tower (though we did it with our son). I lived in Chicago for 5 years and can enjoy playing tourist on return trips.
