Summer weekends are not the best time to see celebs in NYC. That said, any that are playing in a show on Broadway or any scheduled for an appearance on one of the morning shows (like weekend Today) might be seen coming in or going out of the studio/theater.

Well - at this time of year may of the celebrities have abandoned the city for the Hamptons.
And it depends on what celebrities she wants to see.
If you go to stag doors you can see Broadway stars.
If you're talking celebs in their natural habitats you're best wander in the West Village or Central Park West - or certain areas of Tibeca - since a lot of actors, musicians live there. But you could wander to days and never see anyone.
Or you could try to have dinner in one of the celeb hot spots if you can get reservations and are willing to pay the prices. But definitely look at Mon to Thurs nights - and after 10pm - and bring a very fat wallet.
If you call 311 they may be able to give you the web site that shows what TV shows and movies are currenty being shot where in the city - but it's very hit or miss - many stay in their trailers.
And depending on who she wants to see - they may be in Cal - or Europe now.
(I've seen a huge number of celebs - but always in their natural habitat - shopping or trekking around the city - but it's incredibly hit or miss.

I agree that summer weekends might not be the best... but maybe you can still live the dream with her...if you can't arrange to see celebs (although some tips for seeing some are below, I recommend letting her have the celeb experience -- walking where they walk-- doing what they do (in theory) and lowering her expectations -- we might not see them - you know that so and so -- but we can sure have fun trying...
Some thoughts...walk in the stars shoes and live like they live and where you've heard they go...
1. Sex and the City
The pitch: Tell your girlfriends you had a cupcake at Magnolia bakery, you know, the same bakery on Sex in the City
Pay for it: http://www.zerve.com/OnLocation/SATC
Free (self guided walking tour - my pick) http://www.thenewyorkcitytraveler.co...-of-manhattan/
2. Go past celebrity homes
http://www.portalmix.com/addresses.htm
3. Find out where filming will be taking place and hang out around the film set
Here's how:
a. Discover what is currenlty being filmed in NYC
http://www.nyc.gov/html/film/html/lo...ductions.shtml for listing
b. Goto IMDB.com or do a google search for "where is SHOWNAME" ebing filmed in NYC to find the location
OR
when in NYC simply look for pink signs from the Police office on trees around town -- they state what is being filmed when... One well found filming on location would work for you...
4. Fake it - go to the wax museum and pose and take photos with every celeb
The sell: Lie to your friends and say, see, I met so and so after showing them your picture with Beyonce
(Lying not recommended, but you get the point)
5. If happen to be here on a Friday (not sure how strict your weekend definition is) goto a 7am taping and concert for the today show or other show -- see Vanity Fair's summer list for schedule
http://acontinuouslean.files.wordpre...mer-guide2.pdf
E.G. Friday August 1st, Cherly Crow
see last page of guide
6. Goto a Dave Letterman Show: (in person ticket info)
http://lateshow.cbs.com/latenight/la...kets/inperson/
7. Saturday night live might have same thing... I did not see right off...
Good luck and take a deep breath...
Oh and to forget about celebs how about a knock of prada or coach bag...
try mulberry and canal... someone will say handbag.... follow them, don't be afraid and have some cash... don't pay more than 35 and negotiate...
Enjoy!

Agre - I have seen dozens of celebrities - but when I was shopping (Woody Allen used to shop in my market and I stood behind Goldie Hawn at Tower Records), have been on flights (to London with Cher and to ? with Treat Williams), nearly ran down Alec Baldwin with my car (he jumped out of a cab without looking) and was run into bey Elliot Gould (a very large man). Oh - and I shared a vet with Kevin Line and sawthim there several times.
But - in umpteen years of dining out - granted mostly in my neighborhood - the only ones I've seen at restaurants were a couple of local TV news people. The best chance to meet celebs is at some charity event - and there I have met several: Maya Angelou, Derek Jeter, Larry King, Senator Chuck Schumer.
If she wants to see the people in the tabloids - she should be looking in LA - or in a bunch of late night clubs she can;t get into.
Agree you can often see things being filmed - but you see all the trucks, trailers, wires, lights and a few technical people. They have done Law & Orders in my area for years and have seen Jerry Orbach numerous times and some of the other detective a couple.

I have to agree with others that your chances for celebrity spotting aren't high on a summer weekend.
B actors and lots of soap stars live on the upper west side where I live, and I see them all the time. Especially character actors.
Bigger sightings are usually in greenwich/west village and on 57th Street on weekday mornings and in midtown near 57th and 5th/Madison (shops).
Eating at a trendy village spot for brunch is possibly your best bet.
