Yikes...don't the waters immediately surrounding Catalina Island have an extremely high shark population? Snorkeling? You are brave!

no recommedations, just a response to the previous poster. Catalina is considered one of the top snorkeling spots in the world - yes, world. The visibility is excellent. .
and yes, the water will be chilly in the 50's, but nothing a wetsuit rental won't cure.
Sure, there may be sharks, just are there everywhere else, but not any more of the "man eating" kind that Ani fears. Apparently he/she never got over the movie "Jaws" .

Must say, I've scuba in Catalina quite a few times and only seen a shark once. That was on the 'wild side' of the island (open ocean side). So chances are you're not gonna encounter one. More likely you'll see lots of garabali (Calif state fish), Rays, hopefully a few Black Sea Bass. Oh and don't forget the beautiful Kelp forest.
Anyway, you can certainly do both.

Check out www.kayakcatalinaisland.com
They do both activities.

I've rented kayaks from them and all went well. I've never done the snorkling thing, as most times I'm doing scuba. But I'm sure they do a good job with that also.

Have a great trip.....

My only shark encounter and not a direct encounter was diving near Blue Cavern Pt (on the other side of the island from Avalon). We came home after our dive to hear that they had caught an 18 ft great white in the vicinity on the evening news. Kind of creepy in retrospect, but we had no idea at the time.

I'm not familiar with kayak tours, but you can do some snorkeling on your own from the beach at Lover's Cove, a short walk from the boat dock. Bring a wetsuit if you have one or you can rent one on the island.
