Hi, going to Kauai for the first time next week, and wanted to get any recommendations for a car rental? Are there good local choices, or should I rent from the national carriers? Staying at the Hyatt. Any info would be appreciated.

Lately Alamo seems to be having the best rates in Hawaii. Book on the internet for the best deal.

Book a cheap economy car online so you at least have somehting reserved. When you arrive at the Kauai Airport, get your luggage and cross the street to the rental car Kiosks. wlk up and down the row and inquire about the best deal available. Don't hesititate to ask someone to beat the price you already have. Also, inquire about a convertible. There are times when they have an overabundance and will cut a HUGE deal. Have fun.

We are traveling to Kauai, and Maui in April. I have rented a convertible on Kauai. After checking all companines I found that Alamo had the best deal after taxes and state fees were in the area of 218.00 for 5 days. On Maui I booked a full size and used the entertainment book discount 5 days for about 145.00. If you don't want a convertible on Kauai use the E Book for savings.

We are going in a week. I shopped all the major companies for an SUV, and got a MUCH better deal through Priceline with National. $25++/day for a week.

Definitely rent a convertible.

But...leave the car unlocked if you park (especially at a beach or trailhead). After our car top was slashed we found out how common this type of thievery takes place. Now We leave the car unlocked and the windows down...a sign to thieves that there is nothing of value in the car.

I'd rent from one of the National carriers, there are so many rental agencies on the islands that you can usually get a pretty good deal reserving ahead. We rented from Hertz on the Big Island in February. We reserved a compact car for $109 for the week using Expedia, but were able to upgrade to a convertible for an additional $10 per day when we arrived. This was cheaper than the convertible we got from Alamo using Priceline for Maui at $25 per day for the next week of our trip. The car from Hertz was cleaner and the service at the counter was better than Alamo. I would pay a little extra to rent with Hertz again.
