Calling all Texas Fodorites

Mrs. Sun and I will be in Dallas from Sept. 11 through the 13th so I got to thinking would anyone want to get together say on Saturday?

Other than the occasional layover I don’t really have much experience with Dallas. I have seen that there is a farm and art market downtown and looked into the aquarium but have made no real plans. So if any of you have any suggestions as to places to stay and things to see and do that would be great.

How is the museum for the Kennedy assassination? Anyone been?

Hi SFG, I no longer live in Dallas, but I did for a few years.

Please don't bother with the Aquarium, there are many much better aquariums in the US.

The 6th floor museum is great - don't miss it.

I'm a huge fan of the Dallas Museum of Art and the Nasher Sculpture Garden next door. Both are of a "managable size" so you don't get too overwhelmed like some other mega-museums.

If you have a car, it's worth driving over to Fort Worth - very different city and more "traditionally Texas".

If you like gardens, I also recommend the Dallas Arboretum.

Hmmm, thanks for the heads up on the aquarium I will do some more digging on that one. Will also check out the museums you mentioned.

So Ft. Worth what would you suggest we do there? I really had not looked into it but I will do some digging now.

Thanks YK for the ideas, you’re as helpful as always

For FW, people enjoy walking around Sundance Sq: http://www.sundancesquare.com/

Visit the FW Stockyards http://www.fortworthstockyards.org/
National Cowgirl Museum http://www.cowgirl.net/

For art and culture, the Kimbell Art Museum and the FW Modern are fantastic. FW Modern has a very nice cafe.

The FW Botanic Gardens is nice too. http://www.fwbg.org/

The places in Dallas I mentioned:
Dallas Museum of Art http://www.dallasmuseumofart.org/index.htm
Nasher Sculpture Center http://www.nashersculpturecenter.org/
Sixth Floor Museum http://www.jfk.org/

Dallas Arboretum http://www.dallasarboretum.org/

For shopping, my favorite is NorthPark http://www.northparkcenter.com/

Good ideas listed already.

In Ft. Worth, I think the Kimball Museum of Art is a must if you enjoy that type of thing.

(Also, I put some things on your fb, too.)

If you like zoos, I preferred the Dallas to the F.W. zoo, however, it has been many years since I was there.

Again, the Dallas art institute is nice, as is the FW cultural conmplex. The "Modern" is very interesting, if you like modern art.

Regardless, I would suggest checking the websites to make the most of your time and to know what the traveling exhibits they will have.

If you like wine, there are several wineries in the area. Some are "real" (as in make wine from fresh grapes) and some are "juice" (as in make wine from juice.) I am an amateur wine maker, so while there is a difference, none if better than the other. Most of the wineries seem to be north of Dallas, although a few have tasting rooms in more-central Dallas.

have fun.

Ok here is what our tentative plans are for our time in Dallas.

Friday Sept. 11th
Arrive in town and check into hotel
Go see the 6th floor museum

Saturday Sept. 12th
Go to the Dallas arboretum
Visit the Dallas World Aquarium
Shopping in the quadrangle

Sunday Sept. 13th
Maybe go to the downtown Farm and Art Market
Return home

So those of you that live in Texas and want to GTG when would work best for you?
