We're visiting New York next week and need to get from Downtown Brooklyn to Penn station next Sunday 2 May.

However, I've just found out that there's a 30,000 person bike ride taking place in the city with various road closures so I was approx how long we should allow to get from Downtown Brooklyn to Penn by subway - I was thinking 1 hour to be on the safe side! We need to be at Penn for 12 noon.

I wouldn't think that the bike tour would impact subway time much, if at all. And I think allowing one hour would definitely get you there in plenty of time.

What will impact your ride more than the Bike Ride will be the weekend track work, which re-routes trains at an incredibly annoying frequency. Please check the MTA site for up to date info:

Sometimes HOPSTOP will incorporate the changes into their routing, if the MTA has posted the weekend change far enough ahead - the hopstop route will reflect the change (and say so) otherwise try the MTA's trip planner.

Not sure what stop you're thinking of coming from - 'downtown Brooklyn' usually refers to the Borough Hall stop - which is a on an average day 25- 35 minutes to Penn Station.

The A, C, E, 1,2,3 stop underneath Penn Station and the B, D, F, N, Q R, V, W stop a block away.

If you taking a train at Penn you will need some time to buy tickets and then engage in the mad dash to the train as well.

Can't OP also get on the LIRR train at Atlantic Ave station? That would take them right into Penn Station. Believe it's only 1/stop. The schedule though might not be as frequent as the subway.

Regardless, whether by subway or LIRR, being underground shouldn't be impacted by a bike ride above ground.

The OP didn't mention the LIRR or any railroad need. (Penn Station also has New Jersey Transit trains and Amtrak trains, also Megabus and Bolt bus nearby.) If the OP needs the LIRR, then the Atlantic Avenue station is indeed the better idea.

Weekend track work has made for interesting rerouting lately, so be sure to check the service advisory listings.

There is no direct connection between the Brooklyn LIRR and Penn Station. You would have to go Jamaica Station and then head to the other.

My endorsement of the Atlantic Station was not as a way to reach Penn Station, but rather as a way to connect with LIRR trains. This would be useful for anyone traveling on the LIRR except those traveling the Port Washington branch, since whether from Penn or Atlantic, all train lines (except Port Washington) pass through Jamaica Station.

We're still not clear if the OP needs Penn Station for a particular reason, or if Penn Station is a nearby landmark for the final destination.

To reply specifically to the OP - first - the bike rides will not interfere with subway transportation. That is the advantage of underground transportation. It is no more than 30 minutes from downtown Brooklyn to Penn Station by subway.

Thanks for your replies and sorry for not making my original post clearer:

- I will be travelling from Willoughby St in Downtown Brooklyn to Penn Station and then taking a coach from near the station to Boston;
- The reason I asked whether the bike ride would impact on the subway times is that (in London) they sometimes close some subway stations when there's a big event on and/or there can be time-consuming queues to get into the subway from the road
