Broadway Play opinions

Hi all,

My family of 4 is planning our very first NYC trip spring 2008. I would like opinions on Wicked, Legally Blonde and The Lion King. I'd like to know your favorite choice out of those three. Let me know if you've seen them all or not.

Thanks so much

I've seen them all. It's hard to say which is the favorite, although I can clearly say that Legally Blonde would be my least favorite of the three (but I still liked it a lot). Lion King remains a masterpiece of creative showmanship. But I suppose overall I like Wicked the best of the three.

I've seen Wicked and The Lion King, and I've seen Legally Blonde on MTV

Out of the three, Wicked is my favorite by far. It has a great story and terrific music, as well as cool costumes and some great effects.

I think I'm one of the few who isn't a huge fan of The Lion King. However, the costumes and staging are completely stunning.

Legally Blonde is very cute and entertaining, but would be me last choice of the three. Have you seen the movie? It's also the only one of the three for which you will be able to get discounted tickets.

Have a terrific time in New York

I agree with Patrick and Beth -- go with Lion King or Wicked. Both are good, in different ways. Lion King is just spectacularly staged. It will take your breath away. Wicked is a more clever story and music.

Wicked.
Wicked.
Wicked.

I've seen Lion King on Broadway and the staging is incredible, but still not one of my favs.

I haven't seen LB and expect it would be cute, but Wicked in amazing (at least IMO anyway)

Of those three, I've seen ONLY the Lion King, but I wanted to chime in to agree that there are others of us who think the Lion King staging is phenomenal, but otherwise weren't that enamored of the show.

I've seen them all. Depending on how old your kids are, the special effects on Wicked might be a little 'scary'. Other than that, it is a phenomenal musical and met all my expectations from the rave reviews. As stated, The Lion King is a classic that everyone should see once, but Wicked is still my favorite of the three by far.

Wow, great replies, just the kind I was hoping for. The girls are 15 & 18 so I hope they'd be okay with special affects.

I have seen both Wicked and The Lion King. I thought the Lion King was wonderful, but Wicked is my absolute favorite. I would love to see it again. Based on the ages of your girls, I think they would really like it. My twenty year old son loved it and so did his friends(boys and girls).

I'm glad you said the ages of your children. For teen girls, I'd vote Wicked #1, Legally Blonde #2 and Lion King #3.

If these were little kids or boys, I'd probably reorder the choices.

Me personally, I liked Wicked the best of those 3.

Okay, now I'm wondering about suggestions for tickets. I can get X or Y in center secion. I can get row H left of center seats 9-15, which when looking at the seating chart seems like it would be quite an angle to be watching the stage. What are the thoughts on that? All tickets I mentioned are full price of $111 +fees.

We sat in about row H, and about 9 and 11. The seats were wonderful. Since that's about 15 rows closer to the stage than those others, I'd much prefer them as I like to see faces not just outlined figures on stage. I did not mind being to the side in the least as I don't think there was a single thing blocked from my view.

For little kids I would put Lion King first. But for young women I would definitely put Wicked as #3, Blonde as #2 and Lion King a #3.

If you want to add anther show at a discount Rent is a classic for teens - with it's themes of emerging sexuality, substance use and rebellion against society. And you can always get good seats at a discount.

I think Blond is geared more for girl tweens. Lion King would be most suitable for younger kids, but entertaining to everyone. What's nice about Wicked is the story line is something most kids, especially teens, can relate to (being teased, feeling misunderstood, wanting to fit it, that kind of thing).

Hairspray another family friendly show which probably also would have last minute discounts.

Alrighty then! Just got the 4 tickets to Wicked row H, left center. How exciting!!

Thanks all for such great advice. As time gets closer ( and this VISA bill gets paid) I may look for advice on a second show, possibly off broadway. That will have to wait until after Christmas though.

If you do have time for another show, I would recommend Curtains, Hairspray, Footloose, Chicago, or Les Miserables before Legally Blonde.
