Broadway in July

My wife and I are in NYC for 8 nights in July. We have never gone to a Broadway Show. We want to go to 2 nights, and really get the best experience possible.
We don't want off-Broadway. We're traveling from Australia and want the most memorable experience possible.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Wow. That's a tall order, not knowing what would impress you. Not everyone would agree what would be the "best experience". Big musical? Serious play? Famous actors?

Well if you're looking for hits - like Les Miz - you need to get tickets now - or you may well be stuck going to scalpers to get tickets at way above face price.

As a first step I would look at Playbill.com and broadwaybox.com to check out what is playing - and then decide which sorts of things you are interested in.

I would suggest one "big" traditional show with great reviews and then decide what else you might be interested in. A lighter musical? A serious play? A comedy? Something more trendy?

We don't know you or your tastes - but from other shows - or movies - you have seen you should be able to get some idea. (If you haven't seen any musicals I suggest renting a few - stage versions if possible - to get an idea.)

What kinds of shows do you like? Musicals? And if so, what kind? Plays? The Broadway experience certainly depends on your likes. I might find Waiting for Godot or The Glass Menagerie a mind-blowing experience, but you might be bored. I might love Book of Mormon, but you may find it obscene.

We're doing the same thing in July, with our teen girls, but have seen quite a few shows already.

We want to stick with a musical. What's the best way to get tickets?

I've seen others mention coupon codes. Are these available for the most popular shows? Lion King, Book of Mormon, etc

Discount coupons are available only for those shows longer filling all seats. Check broadwaybox.com - if they don't have coupons you will have to go to the show's official seller and buy full price tickets - if lucky and far enough in advance (or a scalper at way above face value if you wait and don;t buy now).

As I continually remind everyone, check BOTH broadwaybox.com and playbill.com for discount offers, as not all offers are available on either site.As nytraveler wrote, you will not find discount offers for the hit shows such as The Book of Mormon, The Lion King, Wicked, Kinky Boots, Matilda, Aladdin and others.

PS: While there are no discount offers for the shows mentioned above, some of them (Kinky Boots, Matilda) sometimes have tickets at the TKTS discount booth for early-in-the-week performances (Tuesday evening and Wednesday matinee at least).
