Broadway Banter revived, Spring 2015!
I have been to NYC and seen some shows and am planning two more trips there in the next 2 months. So I looked for the Broadway Banter thread. It appears that it died at end of 2014. What? This has always been a highlight of Fodors for me, so I say time to bring it back!
Two weeks ago I saw The Lion at Lynne Redgrave theater in the Village. This was one of the best off-Broadway shows I have ever seen. The set was simple but perfect, the paint on the walls reflected so much turmoil as different light colors reflected off of it. Ultimately, this is one man's life and his attempt to make sense of it by guitar. Actually, plural there, guitars, there are 12 of them on stage that are played by the one man, and one other important one made reference to. It is a lovely story, very touching, very honest and the music is very good.
While at the Lynne Redgrave I saw signs for Culture Project's production of NIRBHAYA, and it sounded so interesting that I am planning a solo trip back to NYC top just to see it in early May. The play centers around the true story of the young female medical student who boarded a bus in New Delhi a few yrs ago and was gang raped and died of her injuries. But what is really interesting is that all the actors and actresses in the play who are "on the bus" have true stories they tell of their own abuse in India. This play own awards in Edinburgh and other theater festivals and I am thrilled to be able to see it soon. It has a limited run into mid-May.
I am considering seeing another show since I have two nights. I am taking suggestions....
On the next trip in Jume I am toying with taking Mr. Emd3 to see FUN HOME. Jubilada here posted about it and I have been reading up, it sounds unusually good, and it's a musical, I am intrigued to see how the music goes with the plot. I think this is a true story too?
So WHATS UP with you old timers and others? What is your Bway news as we are heading into Tony season???

Debit on here suggested An American in Paris...am thinking of it for the extra night during my May trip while there are still discounts. But one thing I am concerned about is the length of some of the dance segments. Nog sure I want to watch a17 min ballet segment...should I not be concerned abt that? I do love Gershwin (and Cole Porter) musicals...

Most of the ballet segments were not all that long, there is one that is a bit lengthy, but the show is SO worth it if it is something that concerns you. Don't let that overshadow this amazing production.
I like (love) a Gershwin tune; how about you? IF so, be sure to see this play.

Saw An American in Paris this past Sunday. It is wonderful. While my husband was a little less impressed by the ballet heavy first act, by the second act he was totally into it, and the longest ballet is simply gorgeous to watch ( and that's in the second act). This is probably the most visually exciting show I've ever seen on Broadway (and that's a lot). Scenery and lighting are really special.
I see the "dirty" sock puppet show today -- Hand to God. Looking forward to it. And yes, Fun Home is indeed a moving and beautifully done "small" musical.
My biggest recent disappointment was Living on Love". Finding Neverland is quite good, and I think worthy of better reviews than it got.

Underhill, go to playbill.com. On the right sie of the home page, about halfway down, you'll see the "Insider Info" heading. One of the subjects there is the schedule of upcoming Broadway shows. You'll find a whole list of fall openings there.

Not lately, but we're seeing Something Rotten on Sunday. The Times didn't like the show, but, interestingly, some of his comments made us feel that we'd enjoy it. Further, other reviews were more favorable. Variety even called it "deliciously funny"! I'll report back after seeing it.

I saw a photo on FB of Amy Grant at the opening and got all excited. I googled quickly and realized she was just there to support Wayne Kirkpatrick, but the reviews make it sound very interesting.

A second for On the Twentieth Century. A great big wonderful, funny musical. Kristen Chenowith is in top form
I saw Hand to God yesterday, a VERY irreverent dark comedy. I laughed my head off. But not for the easily offended. -- or even the not-so-easily offended.

I missed out on decent discounted seats for American in Paris for my date (next Fri, May 1). I will look into Twentieth Crntury, thanks Patrick. And looking forward to your report , howard. A good musical comedy actually sounds great, to balance out the serious subject of Nirbhaya on Sat. Night.
Tony nominations soon!
