Breckenridge in July

Can anyone suggest ideas for summer day trips from Breck for a family with preteens. We enjoy outdoor activities. How far to Rocky Mountain National Park? How about Fly fishing rivers? Are there any Alpine Slides running?

Bonn, Bicycling! There are companies that will take you and your bikes to the top of Vail pass from which you can spend the day riding back, almost all downhill (except a little uphill grade from Frisco to Breck). It's beautiful and fun. Stop at Copper and take a ride up the chair lift for great views. You can also take your bike up the chairlifts and ride back down.

Bonn, yes Alpine slide in Breck. Its a long drive to Rocky Mtn National Park. Gold metal trout fishing in the area. Check out www.summitnet.com for summer activities. Tons of things to do! Summer is a wonderful time to visit!

Take a jeep tour, drive to Glenwood and check out the hot springs and Vail on the way, the Alpine Slide should be open, the Blue River in Silverthorne is a gold medal trout stream, hike Peak's Trail between Breck and Frisco (at least part of it), check out the Breck Rec Center, rent a kayak or pontoon boat (water levels willing) on Lake Dillon (from the Marina in Dillon), take a hot-air balloon ride. There's enough here to keep you busy without having to go too far.

How about a nice hike up a 14,000 foot peak. Quandry Peak is a short scenic distance south of Breckenridge and a great family day climb. I took my 8 and 10 year old grand daughters to the top lat September and they loved it.

why does everyone suggest 14,000 foot peaks for out of towners who may not be accustomed to that altitude? jeeze, it's tough even for natives who are in shape! and forget RMNP as it is too far. For my money, i'd skip Breck entirely and head to steamboat.

Steamboat? Is that place still open?? Just kidding. You are absolutely right about the elevation. Just yesterday, another cardiac arrest up here. Moderation in moderation, the key to life.

I guess I am the only person that doesn't think that RMNP is a far drive. I consider a long drive more than at least a few hours and I would think Breck to RMNP is about an hour if you go through Blackhawk/Central City area. You would probably want to get up early to head out though so you can make a full day of it.

Flopmaster is right. Forget the hike, or for that matter the bike ride unless it is all down hill. A jeep ride to Vail and Glenwood just doesn't cut it. Anyone from out of state should not beat around the bush. Just head streight to Rocky Mountain Park - not far - spend a few days or make a couple of trips there. You won't want to miss it. Colorado at its best.

There are a number of beautiful hikes that are close to Breck, without going up any 14,000-foot peaks. Our favorites are Mohawk Lake & Blue Lake, but there are others.

There are several fly fishing guides that operate out of Breckenridge, if you want a guided trip. Great fishing.

There's the Alpine slide (there's a climbing wall, mini-golf and maze at the same location), and all sorts of bicycle rentals. (Our favorite is to bike from Breck to Frisco for breakfast, then bike back, but be prepared for a 17-mile ride.) You can take a jeep or hummer tour (though a number of their destinations you can get to yourself). You can go to Vail for the day, or visit the mining museum in Leadville.

Make sure to spend time splashing in the Blue River in the middle of town; it's a great activity for kids (and adults) on a sunny afternoon.
