Boston to New York
Me, my sister, and our three teenage boys are travelling from Boston to New York. Ideally we would like to go by train, but I have just tried to book it on Amtrak and the times we want to go, they only have business class tickets left. Is it possible to just buy tickets on the day?

I echo vjpb's question.
Are you looking at Acela or the regular regional trains? I would definitely not bother with Acela for this trip.
Sit on the left side of the train from Boston to New Haven for good views of the Connecticut coast. Then switch to the right side from New Haven on for the best skyline views of Manhattan.

There are so many trains I can;t imagine they're all full unless you are buying for the next day or two. Ignore the Acela - not worth the extra money - and just buy regular Amtrak. And the the sooner you buy the lower the price.
What dates are you trying to buy tickets for?

If you are going during the week, you can often buy tickets on the day of travel, but they are usually twice as expensive as if purchased in advance.
If you can't find something affordable, just take the bus.
