Boston freedom trail and gloucester ma
We will be coming to Boston via I-90. We would like to visit the Freedom trail and then go on to Gloucester, MA. We do not want to drive in the city of Boston. Where would be a convenient area to stay so that we can use public transportation to the trail, return to our hotel and the next day leave (in our vehicle) for Gloucester?

Do you know what time of day you'll be heading in via I-90? Not sure how far away you want to stay/ or rather how far into "Boston traffic" you want to get...but La Quinta Inn Somerville will shuttle you to the T station, and then you'd just head out route 99 to route 1 and Gloucester. The traffic will be heavy after 3:30pm however.

Could we ask a couple of questions?
It sounds like you want to arrive in Boston around 1, walk the Freedom Trail and go on to Glocester the sme night???? Or next morning? What is your schedule, and what day of what month?

Actually, you could take the train in from Gloucester.
The advantage of Beverly is that it's a junction point, so more trains. A major disadvantage is that there is almost no parking at Beverly Depot.
A major disadvantage of commuter rail in general is that the trains are fairly infrequent (at certain times of day only once every two hours to/from Gloucester).
Quincy and Gloucester are on opposite sides of Boston, so if you stay in Quincy you will either have to leave very early on Wed. AM or wait until after morning rush hour (probably 10 AM, to be safe) to avoid the commuter traffic into Boston.

You can take a look at the Hotel Indigo in Newton. You can walk from there to the Riverside Station, the end of the Green Line D subway/train. It's about a 40 minute ride into Boston, but is scenic (above ground) for part of the way.
There is also the Hyatt Place in Medford. It is close to the Wellington T stop on the Orange Line, where you can park, or take the free shuttle from the hotel.
