Probably the reverse of how you will be getting there to begin with?

I recall you are staying near the PATH station in Jersey City. Therefore, walk or take subway (N, R, Q) to Herald Square (34th/Broadway). The subway station is connected to the PATH 33rd St station there.

Well the best way is probably the same way you got INTO the city. You can take a bus from the Port Authority, or the Path Train (at 34th and 6th) or the easiest is to take a cab or car service.

Check with your hotel on transportation options into the city.

vjplovesitaly, we will be coming into the city on the PATH near the WTC sight and doing a day full of sightseeing, etc. - so I will be in a different location at the end of the day. I thought there would be an easier route than going back south to the WTC sight. Thank you ellenem for the info!

It still might be more convenient to go back to the WTC PATH station; otherwise, you have to change trains at Journal Square depending on where you're going.

Sorry ... I hit "submit" too soon. I should have clarified that I don't know how the schedules run at night on the PATH since I don't take it regularly. It's possible you might have to go all the way to Hoboken to change trains or perhaps even Grove Street. Anyway, the short answer is that Exchange Place is only reachable from Manhattan via the WTC station, and depending on the schedule, it might be more to your advantage to have a nonstop trip.

Here's the PATH map http://www.panynj.gov/path/schedule.html
You'll see there's some PATH service at 33 st. which is at Penn station, not far from Times Square. There's also NJ transit train service from Penn station to Newark. Not knowing what time you're talking about returning and which PATH station your hotel is near makes exact directions impossible. njtransit.com has a trip planner but I don't know how accurate it is. Hopstop.com is another option to use for directions. You can specify a day of the week and time.

PS there are buses to NJ from Port Authority bus terminal whiich is a block from Times Square. Not sure whether your hotel is near one of those stops but another option besides train worth checking.

There are also ferries between midtown (west 39th st.) and Newport Center in Jersey City and also Hoboken. It's more expensive but could be a fun way to leave if their schedules work out for you. http://nywaterway.com/Commuters.aspx
