Best US destination for a few days away from our kids?!?

Every year our wonderful parents watch our kids for a few days (wed-sunday) so we can go away together without them (don't worry, we take a family vaca every year too so they don't totally miss out). I'm having trouble picking our next desitination. We love good food, the outdoors and being entertained in general. Some of our favorite spots are New Orleans and San Francisco. I've thought about somewhere it the Southwest - Santa Fe or San Antonio maybe? I don't know. We'll fly anywhere in the continental US for this vaca. What do you suggest for 2 30somethings looking to enjoy a few days without our children?

Montreal. Not US but "continental." Stay in the old city. the food is amazing, the people wonderful, and the exchange great. You can rent a car, tour thru the lorentian mountains, drive up to Quebec City, or just wander around MOntreal. there are jazz clubs, great places to go shopping for trendy clothes, and really feel like you've gotten away from it all -- because you will have!

Coastal California, anyone? San Francisco, Santa Barbara, Santa Monica, Hermosa Beach, Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, Dana Point, La Jolla, San Diego.... Some of the best food choices in the world, some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world, some of the best entertainment and nightlife you'll ever experience. Name a place, you'll get dozens of suggestions.

Flopmeister - I love Montreal. I was there for work once and have always wanted to return for pleasure. Good suggestion.

if you need specifics let me know, my wife was born and raised in Montreal, we go all the time. don't know when you're planning your trip, but i'll tell you that late sept. is absolutely wonderful -- it's about the ONLY time of year the weather is beautiful there. the foliage is amazing. there are also some VERY romantic b&b's up in the Laurentians.

Santa Fe is a lot of fun, and there are some great, romantic places to stay in the area. Bishop's Lodge has always been one of my favorites. You can drive up to Taos, too.

San Antonio would be a better place to take a family vacation. There's Sea World, Fiesta Texas, and the Riverwalk and attractions downtown. Not far away is Schlitterbahn and tubing on the Guadelupe River. It's a very popular destination with my fellow Texans!

Santa Fe is wonderful. So are some of the coastal areas in the southeast such as Charleston, Savannah, Wilmington and the Cape Fear coast or some of those islands off the coast of Georgia. Wonderful food in all those places and lots of natural beauty as well.

My hubby and I also try to do a weekend away from our little one. We have also enjoyed some of the same places you mention. We have heard that Key West is very fun. I liked the Riverwalk in San Antonio and I also have on my list Charleston.

Also, not US but how about Vancouver? It seems to fit your three main criteria perfectly (good food, the outdoors and entertainment). It's also often compared to San Francisco, one of your favourite spots.

Oh, NYC in a minute!!!!!!!!!!!! We were there with our kids 3 years ago and it was great but I can't wait to go back on a 'couples-only' weekend sometime. I hear rumors (maybe confirmed by now) that Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane are coming back to the Producers in January for a three month run--if so, I'm there!
