havkhones,
Thanks for all of the ideas -- you have helped a lot, since I am completely unfamiliar with what each area has to offer!
zzzz, Such harshness! I posted variations re: the areas we are planning to visit and next time I'll post it all under one post. happy?

Mears Michigan has a Best Western complex that looks out over Silver Lake and the sand dunes PLUS you look straight west. I've been to 4 continents and it is the best sunset I've ever seen. IMHO it is unique and tons better than Grand Haven, Sagatuck etc.(all the touristy fudge, shop and yacht towns.) If you are physical there is over 1000 acres of sand set aside just for the pedestrians. Dune buggies are worth the entire trip. Young people adore this place.

Michigan Lover: Well, there's another place I'm going to check in to!--What do you think about us making stops in Holland, Saugatuck and Grand Haven, with our stay over in Mears? Then we'd head to Ludington and have one-night stay there, before taking the ferry across to Wisconsin. Is this do-able in two days/nights?

Cherish,
Yes, I know it's a bit much, but somehow we find ourselves squeezing a lot into our annual trips, because it's so difficult to decide which places to cut out, not knowing if or how long it will be 'til we make it back again! Besides, I'm not very good at staying put for long-- I do hope it is a good vacation despite this!

Best drive (automobile or bicycle): along the bluff north of Harbor Springs to Cross Village.
Oddest restaurant: Leggs Inn in Cross Village.
Best boat ride: Lighthouse Tours by Sheplers out of Mackinaw City. Photos at http://mightymac.org/lights.htm
Be sure and vist some wineries in the Lelenau and Old Mission Pennisulas near Traverse City.
