Best non-tourist trap restaurants in South Beach
We will be staying near 17th and Collins in South Beach May 3 to 5 and are looking for restaurant insight. This is our first trip there and I find the list of area restaurants overwhelming. What are our best bets reasonably close by for really good food, preferably with reasonable pricing. We really want to avoid mediocre tourist traps.

We ate there in January. Nothing fancy, just good Cuban food at decent prices.

Yardbird is casual, moderately priced, and with good, Southern-influenced food. Finalist for two James Beard awards:

I would steer clear of those places along the beach strip that attempt to lure you in with the promise of gargantuan drinks that cost about $50 for two people.
Joe's Stone Crab is a classic. You can have a very expensive meal here, or an inexpensive one, depending on your choice of dishes. I think it is well worth visiting, though not necessarily for the crabs. On a budget, get the excellent fried chicken, or the chopped steak; each costs $5.95. It attracts tourists, but also many locals.

Read restaurant reviews online in the Miami Herald or the Sun-Sentinel. There are people around here who think if it isn't in New York it is automatically "mediocre" as some recent threads have demonstrated.
