We are planning to take our adult children (28, 26, 22) over Thanksgiving. We have never been to Outer Banks and will be coming from Virginia Beach. Which area should we focus on.....Hatteras, Nags Head, or others? We want to rent a vacation home to spend the holidays together since our sons are both home from deployment. We would want activities, bicycling, restaurants, variety, shopping.....

Any suggestions on best locations?

Yes! The Corolla area is great for a family gathering at Thanksgiving time. The homes tend to be larger, location a bit more from the hustle and bustle, great place to bring your bikes and ride without traffic, nice restaurants! Try these sites:

We love spending the winter holidays on the Outer Banks. So quite and peaceful. Maybe you'll luck out and have 75 degree weather on the beach like we did 3 thanksgivings ago. For large homes I would choose Corolla but if your looking for a low maintenance cheaper place check out Nags Head.

And I agree with howfar1. Sun Realty is a great vacation rental company out here. Your best bet would be to book with them. We have for years!

I think all three of you, if you're not in fact the same person, look a little suspect as an advertiser.

Most people who live in VB know something about the different OBX communities or know someone who does.

We have always stayed in Nags Head. I have choosen that because we can then go both ways should we want, on day trips. I do recommend a day trip to Ocracoke. Drive to Hatteras and take the free car ferry over and back. Nags Head is the most built up but Thanksgiving will not be bad. I've never stayed in Corolla, we've driven there and my impression is that the homes are very large and not so close to the water. I do recommend a beachfront facility, but maybe being from VB that's not important to you. We always ask where we can go to get fresh seafood off the boat and have never been disappointed. We do a lot of our own cooking. I also recommend you check out VRBO.com We have rented all over the country with VRBO with the exception of the Outer Banks. We have a couple of cheap little mom and pop's that we use cause they are clean and oceanfront and we usually only stay 4 days. Have fun!

We are not from VB....just heading to OBX from there. I have been looking on vrbo....love that site. would be interested in more experiences from others.

We like Duck. The shops are lovely, but I don't know if it is too quiet in the off-season. We're usually there in August. It seems to be a little more polished than Nags Head. We've rented with Sun Realty, too, and I thought they were fine. They really push the hurricane insurance, which I think is mostly a way to make extra money. I always decline it.

If you're not married to the OBX, consider a beach outside of Charleston. You could rent in Edisto, Isle of Palm, or Kiawah and the weather is likely to be nice there. The is a little bit of a tropical zone on the coast there, and even into December it is very comfortable. We go to Wild Dunes each year and have been there in November and January, and enjoyed it even when it was cool outside.

I absolutely love the Banks in winter. I like Duck too. I've also enjoyed Salvo, but it's a little more remote. It can be chilly so be aware. I live outside Charleston and can back up RaleighLaura. At Thanksgiving here it's warm enough (usually) for the kids to play on the beach while you make dinner with an ocean view. There's no reason to buy hurricane insurance in November. Have a great time. Once you've done Thanksgiving at the beach you'll be hooked!

Low maintenance as in not so fancy. You don't have to worry about your kids breaking the giant glass bowl on the living room table because Nags Head homes are more about the beach not the decor. Advertiser? Read the orginial thread.

to OBXGirl I'm relatively new on these posts and have no idea who you or these other posters are. I only have this sign on, no others. I enjoy coming to the Outer Banks as often as I can so when I saw this come up, thought I'd comment and offer the 2 sites I use for renting a cottage and getting information specifically on things going on in the area we prefer, which is Corolla. BTW Bike riding is something we do often while in Corolla, the less busy roads there are great for family rides. Try not to be so skeptical...

We love Corolla and the Corolla Light community especially.
The homes, if not directly on the beach are less than a 5 minute walk from the beach.

The area is quiet in the off season but a quick drive to anything you need.

Corolla Light has stores, restaurants, activities close by.

An absolute must do is the 4 wheel drive on the beach to see the wild horses - they are an amazing site.

Enjoy your trip, I am from the east coast and this is one my absolute favorite places to visit.
