Best area to stay in Maui in December?

Best area to stay in Maui in December?
My husband and I will be visiting Maui at the beginning of December for 8 days. We will be renting a car to move around and don't want to spend more than $100.00 or $120.00 max per night on accomodations. We want to have easy access to both the east and west sides of the islands. We are planning to go hiking in Haleakala, snorkeling in Honalua Bay, ziplining, plan to visit Lahaina and drive the Hana road. We were thinking Paia or Haiku. Any thoughts on these two locations? We also want to have easy access to the airport coming and going. Thanks!

Book your accommodations soon because it will be hard to find something in that price range. Kihei might also have some possibilities, and definitely has more choices of accommodations than Paia. From what I know, the north end beaches can be too rough for good or safe snorkeling that time of year, so you might try spots further south in the Wailea/Kihei area. We like Ulua Beach for winter snorkeling. Because you are planning things all over the island, you will do a fair amount of driving no matter where you stay.

I would not base in Paia or Haiku -- certainly not wet Haiku. Base in South Maui. Kihei has condos in your price range. Early December is the cheapest time to rent condos and cars. A few weeks later the weather will be the same (some rain) but Christmas visitors will be paying the year's highest rates.
Roads to Haleakala and Hana begin in Kahului, which is 20 minutes from South Maui. Take a day to drive up into West Maui, to piney (and windy) Kapalua, stopping at Lahaina Town.
