check hotwire
use any discount codes that you might have: AAA, Sams, Costco, etc..corporate discounts
check all of the rental co websites - thrifty and dollar always seem to be the cheapest, though it will depend on the area/dates
I find that after doing all of the above it is almost always to use priceline or hotwire

I agree that Hotwire is less expensive than dealing directly with a rental company but they do have a non cancellation policy. I recently had a reservation with Hotwire and had to cancel because of the death of my mother. To get a refund, I had to submit a letter from the doctor stating that my mother had passed away but they still charged me a fee of $25. If you do use Hotwire, be sure and take out the cancellation insurance. You never know what might happen. After paying the fee, I discovered my credit card covered the fee, so I was reimbursed for it.
