Interesting questions. I'm not sure you'll get answers to all of them, unless someone is on Rumspringa.

Here's the thing: You are in college. You need to do research that you can cite in your paper. Fodor's is not going to fly with your professor. You must trust me on this.

So, research legitimate scholarly journals for articles that will answer some f those questions.

You can find some answers to your questions here:

Also, please be aware that there are numerous Amish sects and subgroups.

If you are a college student you need to learn how to do research. For anything that goes into a paper for a class you need to use appropriate scholarly sources (properly references - look up ibid, op cit and how to do references so you gather the info as you search - going back later to pick things up is a major PIA).

If you don't know how go to the librarian at your college and ask for some basics on how to search for information for a university paper - as opposed to a trivia contest.

I have rellies married to ex Amish and they have Facebook groups. Look under ex-amish and you will find some. I lived around them a big part of my youth. An Amish family took care of me before I started school. My mom said they loved to put ribbons in my hair. Decorated me up since they couldn't.

Wow....when I was in school and had to write an essay I had to do my OWN research. I guess times have changed or are you really that lazy to expect other people to do your research for you?

I even had to get dressed, go TO the library, find a book on the shelf with "A" to "B", check it out and find a page. Tell the troll to troll on somewhere else.

I know, right? I was THRILLED when, in graduate school, I lived in DC and could go to the Library of Congress.

rough crowd. pray tell don't you all come here to research? why then trash the OP? It's not like they are relying on all of you to do the thesis for them. No reason not to research all over the internet. SusieQQ gets the kind fodorite award of the day. The rest of you bah humbug!

There is a lot of good information all over the internet. There is also a lot of nonsense printed as truth.

For a university paper the OP needs to use reliable scholarly resources, not "info" from random blogs.

But even before computers and the internet, wasn't history written by random blogs?

Yes, we come here for research, for our own travel interests and pleasure.

We do not come here for scholarly research that we will submit to a academic institution of higher learning.

There is a big difference between the two.

You need to familiarize yourself with Google, but ...

1) What is the Amish life look like?
I don't know what that means.

2) What are the languages Amish people speak? Is there certain words Amish people use among themselves?
They speak English, but among themselves, some use what's called "Pennsylvania Dutch," which is really a variation of German. And there are variations of that among various Amish communities.

3) How do Amish people view the world around them?
I don't know what that means.

4) Since Amish, people don’t go to college. What do they do if someone gets sick?
Some go to a doctor, but it's more complicated than that, since different sects have different ideas about medical treatment.

5) What do Amish do in the winter to keep warm?
Wood- or coal-fired stoves, fireplaces.

6) Can someone from the outside world join the Amish community?
Usually not, since the growing up in the community is part of the culture.

7) Is there certain cloth for men and women?
Not that I know of. However, black is the dominant color for clothing.

8) What kind jobs do they beside farming
For men, mostly carpentry and building. They'll hire on with local contractors.

9) Are women allow to have a job?
Yes. Mostly, the only work I've seen women do outside the home is staffing roadside stands selling the family's produce, but, for instance, in resort areas, some will work cleaning vacation homes.

Well, since you are new and this is your first post I'm assuming you only joined to use us for Amish information. You will do much better at the Library, Google, and if you live close enough to a Amish community, observe and ask a few questions.

No - history was not written as random blogs. Granted every person has a point of view and that colors what they may put in their news reports, scholarly journals and fully detailed books/texts written by reputable scholars.

For instance, the OP should look at the history of Amish communities since they were founded, their changing relationship with the larger communities in which they exist, and some of the differences between the various communities. There is a plethora of information out there. Mostly not direct responses to his questions - but a lot of information that will allow him to form his own views - the whole point of having him write a paper at all.

And if his professor is happy with a paper written based on random information from god knows where and no referencing as to the legitimacy of the information - then he is probably attending one of those fake online "universities" focused just on collecting money from students without teaching them anything useful.

Why are we so fixated on this person's methodology? Let the OP do what he/she wants in the way of research. No one here is obligated to answer the post.
