Aloha, Bay Area Lovers of Hawaiian Music!

Makana will be in San Francisco and Redwood City in mid-June!! For those of us who can't make it to Chai's at Aloha Tower Marketplace to hear this incredible music, now's our chance.
See the show schedule on his home page:

Great news.

Now, -- why don't the subscription radio programs have a Hawaiian channel?
DMX, Sirius, XM Radio all have plenty of country, and sports, and talk, and religious channels, but NO Hawaiian? I don't get it?

It's also hard to find Hawaiian music on iTunes - they just lump it in with "World" music.

Gotta love my Sistah Robi and Makaha Sons.

Ag3046, if you haven't heard of it, try Aloha Joe's website for 'net broadcasts.

SFImporter, too true--so many record ( i'm dating myself) i mean, cd stores, when you ask for Hawaiian music, take you to the "world" section. Makana's music is available on iTunes; i think you can link to it via his website.

I personally don't see anything wrong categorizing Hawaiian music as "world" music. I don't think it minimizes or marginalizes it in any way. At least it is being bought and people are listening to it.

'Net broadcasts are fine- KPOA is great, but I would like to have Hawaiian music on DMX, Sirius, XM as a channel when I am driving, or away from a computer.

The "world music" label is so pathetic, it's usally just reggae. Even worse if they add an occasional Hawaiian song.

Give us Hawaiian channels I say!

I agree with Alice, but if anyone had the knowhow, or a good liason - I think a Hawaiian Music All the time would be a smart idea for these subcription radio programs. That said, I am not a member, but do love my local hawaiian stations online!

You might suggest podcasts to stations like KCCN and KINE since they already broadcast on the internet.

Ah, Makana! we hired him for New Year's Eve at Aloha Tower Marketplace. Just a quick warning to those expecting only classic slack key...he is currently experimenting with rock sounds. It's not bad, just a little surprising.
