Adirondacks
Hi, I'm plannning on camping in the Adirondacks. Does anyone know which section would be the most scenic (Im coming from Montreal)? Also which campgrounds are really nice? Im not much of a hiker, but Id love to see some beautiful nature.
If anyone knows of antiquing in the area, id be interested in hearing about that too! thanks!

We camped in the Adirondacks last year and I think it is probably a great area for someone who loves hiking and fishing. This is one huge park so except for a few towns, there are miles and miles of scenery and not much else. I don't recall many antique shops at all but there were some wonderful handmade furniture shops with furniture made of twigs, roots and bark. I can't recommend where we camped since a high number of seasonals made it a ghost town during the week.

Driving through on the way to MOntreal, we passed many signs for campgrounds but of course, I cannot remember one of them!
I know Blue Mt Lake has cabins nearby and a great antiques fair in Sept.
See if there is a Blue Mt web site or even the Adirondacks State Park website~
Good luck and have a great time!

My favorite place to camp in the Adirondacks is Rollins Pond outside of in the Saranac Lake area. This is a NY State campground with good facilities and nice sites. It is pretty wooded and the campsites are relatively private ... be sure to get one on the side that is right on the water (there are plenty of these). You will have "walk-in" access to Rollins Pond (which is more like a small lake)right from your campsite and can rent a canoe right at the campground. Rollins Pond is adjacent to Fish Creek Pond campground ... you acually have to drive through Fish Creek Pond to get into Rollins Pond. We don't like Fish Creek campground as much. The campsites are more open, less private, and are essentially in a big circle around Fish Creek Pond which is much smaller than Roland's Pond ... depends on what you like (some people prefer this). The campgound is about a 15 minute drive from the town of Saranac Lake, 30 minutes from Lake Placid (a great place to visit), and a 45 minute drive from the High Peaks area (Mt. Marcy, Whitefact Mtn., etc.) which has some of the most beautiful scenery in NY State. You can make reservations via the website for New York State campgrounds (www.iloveny.com -- under travel & tourism; campgrounds).
Another option closer to the High Peaks area is the KOA campground that outside of Lake Placid on the road from Lake Placid to Whiteface Mtn.
You can also find out about privately owned campgrounds in the area under www.adirondackcampgrounds.com (although we prefer the NY State campgrounds).

I'd stick to the New York State campgrounds. They are actually much nicer than the private ones. Check their web site. We've camped at Lake Durant, which is in the Blue Mtn. area. Be warned though - they are having a very bad time with bears this year. We also camped at 8th Lake - which was really nice, but the year we were there the bears were bad (breaking into cars at night). I like the Newcomb area, the Lake Harris campground was quiet. If you son't mind no ammenities, the campgrounds on Lake Piseco are nice, but no running water. There is great kayaking in some streams out of Piseco. No problem bears to my knowledge. They all have something to say for them. Maybe you can call the site to the ranger and ask how the bears are.
I don't think antiquing in the Adirondacks is that great. There's an antique shop in Olmsteadville (Town of Minerva) that we kind of like - if you happen to be near there.
