5 nights in Maine in Late September
My husband and I are planning a trip to Maine/Vermont in late September next year and are having trouble narrowing down the area we want to stay in. We love the coast, want to be able to take drives to see the fall colors and my husband loves good seafood.
We're also not sure if we want a rental property or a hotel. What is the weather like in late September?
We are thinking of the Bar Harbor area, but are not sold on it? Any suggestions?
We are also doing 5 days in Vermont after Maine...looking for suggestions for that as well.

Late Sept will still be early for color, there might not be any yet. The Blue Hill peninsula just before Mt Desert is also a nice place to explore. But, if you are interested in organic living and your visit coincides with the Common Ground Fair, I would pick a place that would make that do-able (we stayed near Camden, the fair was in Unity). The mid-coast area is our favorite but we like the Wiscasset area because Camden is within an hour, Rockland is north (Owls Head Transportation Museum, Owls Head Light), Bath and Brunswick is to the south (Maritime Museum, college town) and Boothbay Harbor is next door (Maine Coastal Gardens). Keep in mind the lobster shacks next to the water are usually open weekends only after Labor Day and close after Columbus Day. There is still plenty of great seafood. Check Five Islands lobster for a place with a great view if weather cooperates for outdoor dining. One year we stayed in Searsport which made MDI a do-able day trip.
If you don't mind adding miles to your trip, I suggest heading south to Portsmouth NH for lunch/maybe a harbor cruise and then taking Rt 16/4 to Concord NH (watch out for traffic in the Northwood area). Then head north on Rt 93 which goes right thru the White Mountains. You could spend the night in Littleton. Next day cross over to VT. The Great Vermont Corn Maze in Danville isn't far. We've spent the 3rd weekend in Sept in Stowe and not seen any color at all but first week of Oct should be great.
Weather 3rd weekend of Sept has been wonderful for the past few years. That's my weekend to travel with friends. It is usually warm, jacket at night but it could be anything.
There are so many great areas in VT that it's hard to pick a place. We love the area along Lake Champlain, very rural/farming except for Burlington and Middlebury, both college towns. Our visits are usually in the summer. You would be wise to get reservations now for an October weekend in VT if you want to stay in a B&B or small inn. It's a great state for wandering around. We use a Delorme Atlas to find our way using country roads. Pizza on Earth was the most unique pizza place we ever visited but it was in the middle of nowhere.
