40th birthday weekend getaway near Princeton

Hi,

This forum has always been of tremendous help to me. My brother in law turns 40 on 24th October. I am extremely close to him and would like to gift him a weekend getaway some where close to Princeton. It's a surprise (my sister knows about it).

They would be travelling with a four year old..

Main criteria:

- beautiful, quiet romantic place (but not too boring for a four year old)
- the drive should not be more than two hours one way
- good scenic walks/ river walks etc a definite plus
- a place where they can relax (if it has an indoor pool even better).

I am looking to spend about $150/night. A little bit more or less would be fine. They would leave Princeton on 22nd night and be back on 24th.October.

I am really not familiar with this area...and that is why am asking in such an uninformed way. I am sorry about that.

Hope I will be able to book something for them soon....

I think the New Hope suggestion is quite good. Some others would be:

1. The Brandywine area on the border of Pennsylvania and Delaware. There are Longwood Gardens for botanical fans, and the Winterthur Museum for those interested in colonial American and other antiques. The area around the river is charming as well. Take a look at http://www.longwoodgardens.org and http://www.winterthur.org. A hotel and/or restaurant suggestion would be the Inn at Montchanin Village. Go to http://www.montchanin.com or slh.com

2. Eastern Shore of Maryland – this is such a beautiful unspoiled part of the east coast and would be great in September. Lots of inland waterways for boating, many good restaurants and shops. There are many charming inns and B&B's, my favorite is the Inn at Perry Cabin in St Michaels go to http://www.perrycabin.com.

3. The Hudson River area. You can tour historic homes along the Hudson, such as the Vanderbilt Mansion or Kykuit the old Rockefeller Mansion. Take a look at http://www.hudsonvalley.org/web/kyku-main.html. There is a lot to see and do in this area, including outdoor activities like hiking and canoeing. Take a look at t the New York State tourism website at http://www.iloveny.state.ny.us/. A hotel to consider would be the Castle on the Hudson in Tarrytown (30 minutes from NYC). Go to http://www.castleonthehudson.com or slh.com

4. Mohonk Mountain House, in New Paltz New York. Check out their website at Mohonk.com. This is a true resort with all the sponsored activities you might be looking for, and for day trips you can go into New Paltz which has some antique shops or drive for about an hour down to West Point for the day, you can tour the Academy or maybe even get to a football game, go to http://www.usma.edu. You could also see WestPoint from the Tarrytown area.

5 Skytop Lodge in the Poconos, an lovely old-fashioned family resort. (This is not one of those hear-shaped tub places, it is more like the Greenbrier or the Equinox.) There are lots of walks, golf, boating and other activities at the resort (including children's activities, indoor games, etc). The Appalachian trail, which runs through New Jersey, would be less than 15-20 miles away so a day hike on the trail would be possible. Take a look at skytop.com.

6. There are lovely beaches in New Jersey, and while you can’t sit on them, they are good for walks and the sleepy beach towns. Take a day trip, bring a picnic lunch. Take a look at http://www.state.nj.us/travel/virtua...ch/index.shtml. I would suggest someplace like Spring Lake, which has a very nice downtown with lots of restaurants and shops and also has some nicer small inns, try the Hewitt Wellington see http://www.thehewittwellington.com/. Sea Girt which is nearby may also work, as would Bay Head, although Spring Lake has a better downtown area. Also try vrbo.com for rentals of homes at the Jersey shore (or elsewhere), to the extent people rent their house in the winter, you may be able to get some really lovely beachfront homes or condos quite cheaply.

7. As they like outdoor activities, consider a day of fishing, canoeing or walking in the Pinelands/Bass River. Take a look at http://www.state.nj.us/pinelands/recguide.htm. Can recco any hotels.
