Woodstock Hurley area NY
Looking for some info on this area. I saw something on that Discovery show-Road Trip- and I think I remember them saying Hurley is the "Woodstock" town. Is this right? What area should I go to? Interested in a relaxing afternoon, just walking around, checking out some shops and finding a good place to eat. Thanks.

Hurley is cute, but I actually think that Saugerties is currently claiming to be the "Woodstock" town. Locals recommend Miss Lucy's in Saugerties for good food. Its a fun little place but if I were making a day trip would go to Woodstock also (these are small villages). If you have a car, drive up to the one of the overlooks and take a nice hike or picnic. You might even want to find some of the famous views that Thomas Cole painted. http://www.thomascole.org or go over to Olana across the river and see where Frederick Church painted.

The original woodstock in 1969 was held in 1969 on Yasgur's Farm in White Lake (Town of Bethel) in Sullivan County.
People still show up to visit the area. It's about 2 hours drive from New York. Sullivan County is pretty much of a depressed area. I don't know that you will have a great time shopping up there. If you like hiking or canoeing there are nice places to go.
There is a place called the Eldred Preserve in Eldred which is not far from White Lake. I haven't eaten there in 2 years but went several times before and found it to be worth going to. The restaurant is located in a resort that stocks trout, so the trout has always been fresh and well cooked.
There was another Woodstock Concert that was held in the mid 1990's in Saugerties. I don't think that concert was what was discussed on the Discovery Show. I agree that it's not worth spending a day in Saugerties.
If you want to go to a nice town and check out local shops (which would probably involve either antiques or some type of art) , you might try Woodstock (which is near New Paltz and which had nothing to do with either concert. The 1969 concert is called Woodstock because it was originally scheduled to be held there but the Town of Woodstock refused to allow it). I would also consider Rhinebeck or Hudson.

Bunkhedena is absolutely right. People go to Woodstock all the time looking for the concert site although it isn't really there. Hurley Mountain Inn is a great place to go. Their website is www.hurleymountaininn.com. The scene in "Tootsie" where Dustin Hoffman goes upstate and meets Jessica Lange's father (Charles Durning) was filmed there. Where are you coming from? New Paltz is also an interesting place (Exit 18 on the NYS Thruway) that has some nice restaurants including some quaint ones. My personal favorite there is "Barnaby's". Check out http://www.ulstertourism.info/restaurants.html for more info.

I agree with Bunkhedena, visit Woodstock but stay on the other side of the River. Now this is purely my taste but I much prefer the Rhinebeck/Hudson side .
Olana is wonderful!
While in Woodstock, do go to the Bakery, as far as I know, there is still only one and it is always jam-packed with people but very good.
I always felt like I was stepping back in time, all the people who were at the Original Woodstock, or wish they had been, go there now and live out their fantasy, aged dentists with less hair on their motorcycles LOL
There are great choices of where to eat in Rhinebeck etc also.

Well, if we are getting to personal favorites- I would go to Woodstock for a little "hippie" atmosphere and buy a few tie dyes to take home, (the bakery is "Bread Alone") and then end up in Hudson. It is truly fun visting the overpriced antiques stores, preferably with friends, in order to exclaim over items you still have duplicates of in the junk pile in your basement. And the best restaurant this year is Baba Louies. Yum yum pizza. Although Mexican Radio is good also.....

LOL, Italyagain!
Exactly!!
Hudson is amazing, the way those garage sale items are presented as valuable treasures just waiting for the discerning collector to snatch them up for a mere pittance
and it is always more fun with friends!
