Wedding in Europe- where would you hold it and why?
I originally posted this on the Europe board and received some good suggestions; however, I am hopeful that more of you may be able to chime in- Thanks!
If you were planning a destination wedding in Europe, which city/area would you chose and why?
As luck would have it for my parents, their two daughters are getting married at the same time (relatively)... my sister wants the big, southern church wedding and has agreed to take that off of my hands... my boyfriend (it feels so weird calling him fiance!) and I want a destination wedding- we travel a lot, our friends all travel a lot, and we think it would just be a lot more fun! We've decided against the Carribean wedding and are heavily leaning towards Europe in May 2009. Our first inclination was Prague- we both love Prague and we're there together last Christmas... however, we're afraid flying in and out of Prague may be more difficult for our guests. Now, we're leaning towards Tuscany- a lot of our guests, although frequent travelers have not "done" Italy and are very excited about the possibility of a great excuse to go to Italy... we thought flying in and out of Italy and traveling within Italy may be easier for our guests... what are your thoughts on destination places for a wedding in Europe???
Oh- and our wedding budget would be the same for a "well apportioned" wedding here (as in nice, but not the same cost as a house)... also, travel costs are a consideration for our guests- as mentioned, they can all afford to travel and most do frequently, but we don't want anyone breaking the bank and we'd like to have all of our close friends at the wedding (we're guessing around 35 people). Also, we'll probably get "legally married" in the States before leaving to avoid the legal hoops, but have a symbolic ceremony/blessing there... Thanks!

I'll keep you updated as we go; however, right now, we are still in the planning stages. We are leaning heavily towards Tuscany/Florence- Castello di Bibbione... I'll let you know how it goes!

Hi,
I really like getting married legally in the U.S. and having a symbolic ceremony in Europe. Tuscany, Chianti are wonderful and there are lots of small villas that are out of picture books. Lake Como is gorgeous. Some of the mountain ski villages in Switzerland are gorgeous. If you like the idea of castles, consider Scotland and Ireland because there are many castles, small and large. Many hotels/resorts are castles in both countries. It is relatively easy to get to any of those locations by plane.

Choosing Europe as destination for wedding adds probably another motif for guests to have a side vacation apart from being guests for a memorable & special event.
It is becoming more and more popular as for the costs comparing at original country and honeymoon starts next day, guests are in the mood of joy and vacation....
There are several destinations like France, Italy, Prague, Greece...and nowadays Turkey and Northen Cyprus is also upcoming destinations offering great value for destination wedding......

I would make a list of the places you are interested in and then investigate what it takes to get all the paper work you will need to be married in each country...
Italy for example makes you jump through hoops. I wasn' married there but my brother was...they had to fly to thier nearest consulate to do massive paperwork within a 90 day window of the wedding date.. in turn nothing can be booked until you have the paperwork within that 90 day window...at least this is how it was last year.
Also, check out weather patterns depending on where you go it can be very hot late May which could prove to cause health issues for some people.
The Euro right now as you know is ridiculous..and will only get worse...how comfortable do you feel asking friends and family members to spend a lot of money to come see you married in Europe..versus somewhere else....

isailtheseas- thank you for your reply and I have considered most of the issues you bring up. In my previous post, I noted that we'll probably get legally married in the states, then have a blessing/symbolic ceremony abroad. Thus, no hoops to jump through per se. The declining dollar does suck, but we're prepared to pay more to get married abroad. Also, our friends are frequent travelers and understand the costs associated with coming to the wedding. Furthermore, it is also our plan to minimize our guests expenses by covering some of the lodging expenses and providing them with several events (tours, classes, etc) while there. Additionally, I have informed my friends that there will be no need to buy bridesmaid's dresses, matching shoes, pay for their hair to be done etc (thus, they can spend that $400 on part of their plane ticket). Additionally, we're planning on doing our bachelorette/bachelor parties while we are abroad- so, our friend won't have to pay for another weekend getaway (flight, hotel, car rental, etc). As for the family members that may not be able to make it for health reasons (which would include both our grandparents), it is sad, but as I said, my sister is having the big-southern church wedding this summer and EVERYONE will be there...plus, my grandparents will be able to witness the legal wedding here in the states before we leave for Europe. That said, thanks for tips on Santorini, Tuscany, etc... we've pretty much settled on Italy- now it's between a villa in Marche (found an awesome villa to house all of our guests), a Tuscan Castello (beautiful and what I had in mind), or in Bellagio (the fiance's friends are trying to talk us into this, but some of the prelim research is persuasive)... we're hoping to make that final decision soon...

I think being married legally in the states, would cancel out all other concerns that I expressed to you.
because to me the joy is seeing the actual ceremony however simple or grand it maybe ....when 2 people I care about say...I do

My husband and I vacationed a few summers ago at Villa Vignamaggio just outside of Greve in Tuscany. There was a wedding there during our stay and it was simply gorgeous! We didn't see the ceremony, but saw everything set up and heard the revelers well into the night.
