Data SIM suggestions for my unlocked Iphone 4
I will be in Italy for a week and Spain for 3 weeks this fall. Any recommendations for a reasonably priced data sim usable in both countries? I use the Iphone in the US on T-Mobile. I know I can buy a SIM from a local retailer in each country for voice/text but I really want this mainly for GPS and walking directions when I am out on the street as I will be traveling alone and have a terrible sense of direction. Probably a silly idea in Venice of course, since the streets are so narrow that you probably can't get the GPS signal. Will use wifi and skype for calls and SMS for texts (or one of the new texting apps--is it wazzup--can't remember).
Thanks for any advice.

Try ekit.com or telestial.com. I used the Streetwise map for Venice. You could always buy an app with maps so you don't need a connection to see them. However, be VERY, VERY carefull about consulting an iPhone on the street. They are major targets for theft and you are liable to have it snatched. Better to use paper maps, the ones in guidebooks like Lonely Planet are usually good enough.

Thanks for your suggestions.
Interesting you say Iphones might be snatched. I spent 6 weeks in Italy (mostly Florence) in 2009 and saw local Italians take out their Iphones and use them fairly often. But caution is always good. I did have an iphone snatched from my purse in Union Square in San Francisco a couple of years ago.

See: http://www.fodors.com/community/euro...n-in-paris.cfm
Especially:
"iPhones are the #1 item currently stolen in Paris. Never never never leave them on a café table or use them in public without being very careful.
Paris buses even have a lengthy warning posted in French, English, Spanish and Chinese about being very careful with one's "electronic devices.""
True, you're not going to Paris, but if iPhones are hot in France they're probably hot everywhere in Europe.

Funnily enough, I just finished reading that very thread about Paris and forwarded it to my cousin who will be going there later this year. I will be in Barcelona, which everybody says is pickpocket central, so it definitely helps to be reminded.
