My daughter has a beautiful old steamer trunk. The thing is about 3&1/2 or 4" tall, standing on end, which is the way it opens. One side has a pole and folding hangers and a shoe holder in the bottom. The other side has a stack of drawers, which pull out quite nicely. It has been awhile since I saw it, but it has other things, like a mirror and clothes brushes. Probably a lot of trunks like that on the Titanic.

Good point, it really is like a newfangled steamer trunk! I bet Vuitton still makes the old fashioned kind, and for a lot more than $350

Thanks for the links! Lovely objects. Coincidentally, I'm listening to a Diane Reem show about the revenge of real stuff over technology and the digital world, and the ways in which millennials are returning to old ways. I'm not giving up my eBag, but those trunks are certainly more compelling, emotionally and aesthetically.

I can see times and certain situations where the suitcase linked in the OP might be very handy (say a business trip where you are moving from place to place daily).

14 lbs. is way to heavy and I would have no need for the feature it offers for vacation travel.

The shelf thing is kind of cool but I don't really see the advantage. More weight, less space, and anything that can be folded can be rolled. I love the old steamer trunks that are like mini closets with hanging space and drawers.

This time I did see one of those retro trunks at the airport- no surprise that it was was slickly dressed college age Japanese man. He must travel pretty light to keep it under the limit.

For me my wheely hybrid case/back pack plus three or four stacking cubes works simalar as each cube with different clothing stacks on top of each other--you pull required one out when needed
