I am going to be in Lima all day July 21 and 22. Should I get a guide to see all the sites (museums, churches, dining, culture, nightlife, etc.), or can I do it alone with a good guide book and taxis? I speak very little Spanish but am independent and energetic.

PS. If I need a guide, whom would you recommend and what should I expect to pay?
Lima is very easy to do with a guide book. Taxis are ordinary cars with a bit of cardboard in the window with "TAXI" written on it. They were cheap and I had no problem with them. I speak only a little holiday Spanish myself.
Be careful of pickpockets anywhere in Peru. Miraflores is the best place to stay in Lima.
Tour guides are so cheap, I'd get one. You'll get so much mor out of it. Your hotel can arrange one for you.
My Peruvian friends do not use the taxis with the signs. They only use ones they call. When I take a taxi (really a car service) to dinner, I ask the driver to give me a card and then ask the restaurant to call them for me when I ask for the check. When shopping, I usually just have the driver wait for me.

It was our first trip to Lima,Peru and having read a number of online reviews, I decided to email Luis and enquire about his services. E/mail correspondences were prompt and professional.
Aurelio, Luis's uncle, was assigned to be our driver for 3 days. He is a polite and soft-spoken chap. He is very punctual on all 3 days and always arrives on our pre-arranged time. He has been doing this for the past 11 years and knows his work thoroughly. He communicates well and is able to entertain our many questions.
He gave us good advice and recommendations with regards to our itinerary. After knowing that I like to take photos, he even picked scenic spots for me to take my shots. If we are to be very nick-picky . There was also a buffet lunch in Larcomar. it was a great view, the moment we spent was marvellous.And we would highly recommend his services. We will definitely be repeat customers when we go back to Lima again!
Tips: (1) Luis toldd me that he does airport transfer as well, so perhaps you can consider using them as an alternative to the Hotel or resort services. (2) Go try Larcomar ( A nice mall with a view on the ocean).
