My plans for a month in Argentina are coming together, and now I'm thinking of trying to add Sucre and Potosi', Bolivia, if it is doable. Wanted to go last time I was in SA but didn't. Has anyone done this? I'm thinking of taking the bus to Sucre and Potosi', as it would take more time to fly (according to Rome2Rio) because of the need to change planes. Then I would probably fly from Sucre back to BA and then down to Trelew.

We did virtually that trip in the opposite direction Sucre - Potosi(4 hrs) - Tupiza (4 hrs) - Villazon 1.5 hrs - La Quiaca (0.5 hours) Salta (6hrs). The main reason for going that route was to tour Salar de Uyuni from Tupiza (4 days) . Shame to go all that way and miss it!

Villazon - El Quiaca was one of the more "interesting" border crossings in South America!

Thanks, Crellston. Since posting this, I've found I'd have to pony up another $160 for a Bolivian visa (courtesy of US policy). Just got done springing for one for my short visit to Brazil, so probably won't make it to Bolivia this year, particularly having read the blog regarding the scrum at the border.

Looks like there will be more than enough to do in the Salta/Cafayate area. There are a couple of pre-Inca archaeological sites and a couple of nice museums in the area. So I'll probably spend around a week near there.

BTW--my Brazilian visa came very quickly. I had my Consulate appointment last Monday morning and my passport was back with the visa in Wednesday's afternoon mail! First proper visa (not just a stamp at the airport) I've ever had.

You are very welcome dwd. FWIW I think that is a good move. Loads to see and do on Salta and the NW. In addition to Cafayate, which is wonderful, Cachi is worth a look and the scenery between the two places is stunning.

The road from Purmamarca to the border with Chile towards Atacama is one of my favourite. - Purmamarca-La Quiacawasn't as spectacular, but still wonderful. We couldn't drive into Bolivia because we had a rented car, and we could only drive to Chile. This was a few years ago and you needed to tell the car company well in advance you wanted to rent a car you could take to Chile.

I also liked Cafayate-Salta. And I think it was Salta to San Antonio de los Cobres, a road that wasn't paved that I wouldn't recommend unless you rent a SUV.

IMO.bOLIVIA IS WORTH THE VISA COST, PLUS IT'S SO CHEAP THAT YOU'LL PROBABLY MAKE BAK THAQT AQMOUNT IN CHEAP LODGING, MEAQLS AND TOURSW..YOU CAQN ALSO DO IT COMING FROM PERU

La Paz isalso interesting and fun. crellston had a post about a tour he took to El AQlto. The ne cable car would be a draw for me.
