Peru--Chinchero and Pisac markets in one day?
How easy would it be to visit both the Chinchero and Pisac markets (Sunday ) in one day? I will be stayiing in either Ollantaytambo or Urubamba. What would be the logistics of seeing both markets? Suggested route and other hints? How long a drive would it be between the towns?

We did these(and other sites) from Cusco in one very long day (8.30 to 7.00pm) so it could be easily done in one days from Olly or Uru. (Stay in Olly it is much nicer!)

entry #57 covers a day in the SV.
maras salineras and moray could also be visited en route. We did Pisac in the morning and Chinchero late afternoon when the sunset was magical (make sure you have a look inside the church by the market. I cant recall how long it took to get from place to palce but as the scenery was so spectacular it didn't really matter.Get your driver to drop you off at the top car park in Pisac and he can pick you up at the bottom car park when you have waleked down through the ruins,
Best way is to hire a taxi in Plaza D Armas in Olly or Uru and negotiate a rate for the day (get the driver to write it down so as to avoid problems later).

Just do Pisac on Sunday largest Inkan market
in the known world puts Chinchero to shame.
You can bus down from Cusco for a couple of soles
or hire a driver guide $25 per half day.
If you must do both you can loop around but lots
longer a couple of hours longer through Calca Urubamba
Pretty ride though...

good info If u elect to stay ollantaytambo.org best
casa-andina.com Private Collection or apulodge.com for budget
Usually head there from the airport first to adjust to
altitude lower than Cusco 11000 ft...easy to get sick there.

Yes you can easily do both in a day, I think you will find Chinchero less "touristy" but both are good. If you want to see the mayor's procession Pisac. find out what time it is, (somewhere between 9 and noon I think but got the wrong answer when I asked). If you are in Olly I"d go to Chinchero first since it's on the way. You can do Moray and Salineras on the way back. If you want to walk the Pisac ruins you can have the taxi drop you at the top and meet you at the bottom near the bridge.

We lived in a bungalow in Urumbamba and commuted daily to Olly for work for several weeks in 2008 and so know both places pretty well. Ollantaytambo is a much better place to stay for a few days, better restaurants, nicer suroundings more to see. I can only presume that the "the best restaurants in the SV" TRD refers to are those in the upmarket hotels there. If so he is confusing cost with quality. Lots of local rstaurant provide better , more authentic food at fraction of the cost.
