New Years Eve - Buenos Aires?
Plane tickets are outrageous from L.A., but if we happen to find something that doesn't break the bank, we're planning on heading to Argentina right after Christmas through the New Year. Impossible? Hotels all filled? And what do the locals do on NYE? Heard it's pretty quiet, family oriented, but anyone with a decent idea that's a little more active than stuffing one's face and a little less active than a 20's something disco with loud thumping?

Surfergirl - if you check qwovadis's previous postings you will see that he often posts the same replies regardless of the actual question asked and rarely, if ever, responds to direct questions. A little bizarre that he/she is responding to questions about Argentina with answers about Columbia!
We were in BA over christmas and it was VERY quiet with many places closing down on Christmas Eve for a the holiday as it seems to be mostly a family affair with most people staying at home. We left before NYE but I imagine it is the same then. Much as I love the city, BA would not be my first choice for NYE/Xmas
I doubt you will find all the hotels filled but prices will probably be higher because of the holidays. An apartment for a week may be a viable option.

Thank you Crellston. Yes, I sometimes wonder about gwovadis's cryptic replies but I think everyone has a unique writing style. While some of the info may not be a direct answer or even responsive to the question, it helps me narrow my research, so it is helpful in a sense!
Did you book a hotel or did you rent an apartment? Any recs?

Can't help with hotel recs as we rented an apartment. We were there for a month so it worked out much cheaper than a hotel room (e.g I think we got 4 weeks for the price of 3). We used http://bytargentina.com/ to book a place on Scalabrini Ortiz in Palermo, a good just a short walk from the Subte, parks and Avenida Santa Fe. Choose you location carefully - BAs is a huge city!
As for things to do, we found plenty to keep us occupied for our time there more detail (and some photos of some of these are on our blog Entries 85 on -

We were there for New Year's Eve a few years ago and it was fairly quiet. Book a dinner reservation and - very important - get a cab booked for the return. Many cabs don't work that night and we had a hard time getting one. We found there was a "countdown" and sort of celebration at the Obelisk with the clock. Many restaurants were not open on New Year's Day
