Day Trip by Car from Washington DC - Recommendations Please
Hi there,
Thanks to everyone for all their advice so far to help me with my trip to Washington DC. I have one final request for recommendations.
The family (wife 2 kids, 16 & 12 and myself) have decided that on our spare day in DC (a Sunday) we will hire a car and head out to sample the delights of the surrounding area.
We do not have any specialist must do's, but would like suggestions perhaps a nice coastal route taking in several areas/beaches or something around Baltimore/Annapolis. Maybe something else, I do not know what we could achieve on a Sunday?
Thanks for all your help.

3 Trips.
1) Visit Antietam Battlefield in western Maryland and slip on down to Harper's Ferry.
2) Take Skyline Drive in the Shenandoah and visit either Luray Caverns or Monticello or both.
3) Visit Maryland's Eastern Shore, St. Michael's being the most tourist friendly on the towns.

Pete,
The Skyline drive is usally visited in the fall to admire the foliage. When is your trip? This time of year it is a mainly a camping destination. It is an all day trip, do-able, but not worth the distance just to look at forest, IMO.
Other ideas would be some nearby historic areas: Harper's Ferry, Fredericksburg, St. Mary's City (on the water) and slightly further away are Williamsburg, Jamestown, Berkeley Springs, Sheperdstown. If you decide on Harper's Ferry or Sheperstown, there is the added option of hiking or taking rental bikes along the gorgeous section of the C&O canal.
Luray Caverns is a 2 or 3 drive for a 20 minute tour - your call.
Monticello is nice, but may be of more interest to Americans.
Annapolis and the Eastern Shore would be better on any day except Friday or Sunday as there is a huge traffic back-up on Rt. 50 every weekend during the summer due to DC area residents heading to and from the beaches.
If I had to pick one place, it would be St. Mary's City (90 minutes from DC). See the historic area, the reconstructed historic ship, walk around the St. Mary's College campus. Head a few miles further south and go out on a charter boat to sight see or fish, hit one of the seafood joints right on the water. A nice full day without too much driving.
