Stop half-way from London to Kirkby Lonsdale

Hello,
We will be driving from London to Kirkby Lonsdale in early May and wonder if anyone can recommend a good half-way point for lunch and a short visit - just to break up the 5 hour drive and stretch our legs. Thanks for any suggestions!

Lichfield is just off your route, Always used to be a nice place to stop for a break, that's about three hours into the trip, plenty of paces to eat and the cathedral to visit, or the Erasmus Darwin museum (grandfather of Charles). Stratford or Leamington are closer to London before you negotiate Birmingham. Even Coventry is an option and visit the cathedral.
What you do not want to do is stop on the motorway at any service areas. They are anything but restful and really expensive.

Don't forget to visit Carnforth railway station for a bit of film history. Brief Encounter was filmed there. Clipped vowels anyone?
