Something Different in San Diego Area

We are spending a week in San Diego in a few weeks and have been there many times in the past. Accordingly, we have hit mostly everything touristy along the coast. We have a free day and am looking for some suggestions. I was wondering if a day trip to Anza-Borrego State Park is worthwhile. I know it will be hot!! We have been to Julian on a loop along I8 and back through Ramona and Poway which we enjoyed. We have also been to Temecula. We like to drive and are looking for suggestions for an inland drive.

We are interested in history and crafts.

As always, thank you for your thoughts.

You probably know about the sculptures in Anza-Borrego Park—

We were driving from Palm Desert to La Jolla Shores and my son-in-law mapped out the itinerary—a walk at the Salton Sea (which may be especially interesting in this year of unusual rains), through Anza-Borrego Park, and stops at a date farm for a date shake and in Julian for lunch and pie.

Sorry. When I mentioned the rains, I was thinking of Tulare Lake.
Apparently, the water of the Salton Sea continues to diminish.

If interested in modern architecture, there is the Salk Institute. Guided tours are available once a month.
