They have a limit of 500 kms from Perth , is this common with car rental companies?
In my experience, yes it is, but you can usually extend the radius by paying a nominal fee. Do be aware there are often restrictions on driving after dark in some areas as well (wildlife).

You're fine as far south as Albany and as far north as Geraldton.
Esperance is outside the radius and will cost $100 more.
If you plan to drive beyond Albany, I'd just pay the fee and rest easy - WA gets pretty rugged outside of the 500 km radius. The car could well have a GPS and Australian rental car companies aren't known for being lax when it comes to rental car contracts.
Esperance is a haul - took us eight hours to drive there from Denmark, WA. It's not a place I'd personally try to fit into such a short trip - WA is huge as you probably know - and there's so much to see and do between Perth and Albany. Your time will fly by.
FWIW I have several trip reports for WA posted here - we spent a lot of time in the SW of WA during the seven years we lived there - we loved it. Don't miss the heat and the flies though

thanks Melnq8 I will definitely read your trip report, so far I'm thinking of going to Margaret river from Perth and taking day trips from there , if I don't spend all my time there then I might head to Esperance for 2 days

A quick note that may or may not be relevant.
You mention that you have a premium ticket from somewhere to Perth and then on to Brisbane. Is there a return also on this same ticket? If you then decide not to fly from PER to BNE, then you risk losing any other flights on that same ticket.
You comment on flying out of the Gold Coast, rather than Brisbane, so perhaps not.

margo_oz PER=BNE is the last sector of my one way ticket , I booked a separate ticket to fly out. So if I were to skip per-bne flight I'd still be okay ( I'm still looking for alternate connection ). If I don't go to perth then I'll try and fly to Asia and fly from there , its not easy to find award availability, but I'll keep trying.
