where to stay in Riviera Maya

Greetings! Two girlfriends and I (mid-40's-50)are planning 5 days on the Riviera Maya in April to celebrate the end of cancer treatment for me. Yahoo!!We're looking for a resort with a great beach, fairly luxurious room, some nightlife, not too huge, not crawling with kids. We've been looking at the Riu Palace but are open to any and all suggestions. We're not a wild trio (all happily married), but we are girls who just wanna have fun! Thanks to all for responding!

Personally, I'd stay at one of the lovely smaller hotels in downtown Playa del Carmen. Great restaurants, fun bars, and some nice hotels that don't cost much money. Jean

Congratulations on the end of your cancer treatment. You mentioned the Riu Palace and my husband and I stayed there last April, 2004. We really loved it. It's an adult resort but that doesn't mean you won't see children traveling with parents, grandparents, etc. We thought it was very "americanized" but lovely. It's a resort that's a bit different from others in that you must make reservations for meals but you can request a certain table for your meals. For instance, dinner is served at this AI for a seating at 6:30PM or 8:30PM. It was new for us not being able to walk in at anytime but we did get use to it. Also, I might mention that if you book this resort, request a room overlooking the fountains. The property is set out in a horseshoe manner with a bit of a walk to the pools and about a 10 minute stroll to the beach (crowded, as other Riu resorts allow everyone to use this beach). I think you'd all enjoy it. We had a room with a 2 queen beds (put together) and we also had a sofa bed as well. Good luck!

The Riu Palace looks beautiful, and would be my choice if I were to go all-inclusive.

Have a great time, and congratulations on the end of treatment! May you have the best of health from now on!

I'd recommend the Royal Hideaway. It is a great property and while it is primarily couples we saw a few groups of people there for "girls" time. Plus it is not crawling with kids since it is an adults only property. The rooms are fabulous and there is some nightlife in the Allegria Bar in the evening. After shopping around, I got the best rates for RH through www.skyauction.com.

Congrats on making it through your cancer treatment and good luck in the future.
