Where to stay in Cusco

Hi all,

My bf and I are headed to Cusco/Machu Picchu at the end of July/early August. We are just starting to really do our research (yes, we have tickets for the Inca Trail) and would love some recs on where to stay in Cusco and where to eat/drink/explore. We will have about 3 days there. Any other advice would be spectacular! Thanks!

Cusco is easy to walk around so any hotel that sounds OK is good enough. The town seems to have a travel agent on every corner so easy to book day trips/afternoon trips. You can buy a multi-ticket to see the local sights. Lots of eateries about, notably around the square where the church is.

In March 2007 I stayed at the Novotel Hotel.
it is 2 blocks from the main square and close to many places that you can walk to .

The pictures on the internet did not o Novotel justice and I was skeptical about staying there ... but once I arrive I was glad I was so close to everything.

It really depends on your budget. But I wouldn't stay in Cusco for three nights. I'd go out to the Sacred Valley for one or two of them. I would recommend Sol y Luna.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. Budget is low. Would like to keep it cheap, but also don't want to stay in gross/inconvenient places. So, we are willing to pay more for quality, but prefer quality on the cheaper side if possible.

It's a change to find someone on this board who doesn't want the most expensive accommodation. Try :

hi, i take groups around south america and when we go to cusco we stay at posada sonesta del inca, one block from main square, not very cheap, not expensive, and great location. Friendly staff. Cusco is great only thing that I dont like is how all the restaurant staff come after you trying to get you to eat in their places. I made a point of eating anywhere they didnt. I'll look at where we ate and let you know soon. Options for all pockets. Inka terra in aguas calientes is an amazing hotel, very beautiful, walks, gardens etc, but not cheap.
Sacred valley stunning. You could prob do with a night at the inka terra afetr the inca trail. treat yourselves and try and get room with log fire. Fabulous. Have fun !

During a recent trip to Peru (last month), we stayed in the Posada Sonesta in Cusco. Agree that it's in a convenient location, 1 block from the square. However if you're seeking recommendations for less expensive places, then do check out the Thorntree forum on Lonely Planet website -- http://thorntree.lonelyplanet.com/ca...iCountryId=241
