Really nice photos, and trip report. I visited Colombia in February 2005, also visiting Bogota and Cartagena, and I found both very, very safe, with lots to see. I visited some of the same places in Bogota, including Andre's Carne de Res and the gold museum, and also visited incredible salt mines, which are very similar to those outside Krakow), and found Cartegena to be very delightful. I have visited almost all of the countries in South America (except Paraguay and the three Guianas, and I am visiting the three Guianas in August), and I found Colombia as interesting and safe as the other countries.

I also liked your photos of Lebanon and Syria, where I am planning to visit in May 2008.

Thanks

Popayan is absolutely fine, no problem whatsoever.
I have just added some infos on this city on my blog of interested.
If by chance you're in Popayan a Tuesday, go to Silvia (2 hours bus), you'll be able to meet the Guambianos Indians, a fascinating people.
