We will be traveling between Cozumel and Ambergris Caye. It is possible to do this by bus and ferry however we are a bit concerned about traveling in Mexico by bus due to the recent safety concerns. Any advise or input would be appreciated.

What "recent safety concerns" are you referring to? I have not heard of any problems traveling in Mexico by bus.

Bus in Mexico/CA on the deluxe buses pretty safe

petty theft around the bus stations.

sometimes innocent friendly folks will befriend you

and offer to share cabs they are always scammers.

the little old ladies are the worst.

border officers sometimes try to get you to bribe them

or will come on the bus to try to get you to pay something

you do not have to pay...no big deal if careful just refuse.

"No Gracias" works well in all curcumstances.

Bus ride is easy. Once you get to Chetumal you can take the water taxi to Ambergris Caye or continue on to Corozal by bus or transfer service and hop on a Tropic Air puddle jumper to the island.

See if Maya Island Air or Tropic Air have a schedule that can get you where you need to go.

Maya Island Air has flights from Cancun to Belize City. They're fairly expensive though, and only on some days. I've also had friends who got 'stuck' in Cancun when Maya canceled at the last minute. I'd take the bus, then the water taxi.
