I'm a Belize based tour operator and just back from spending the weekend on Flores. You'll do fine as a single woman, it's safe and friendly and easy to arrange all the hotels, tours and air ahead of time. TACA flys between Cancun and Flores and no problem booking those flights. I like Hotel Peten and Casona De La Isla, both nice hotels onj the lake with ac, cable and small pools. Easy to arrange guided tours of the ruin. You could also spend the night at one of the jungle lodges in the park to watch the sunset and sunrise. Had dinner at La Luna and thought it was good.I felt safe walking around on my own in the arly morning and late evening.

Can you comment on the price of the charters Katie. I would love to fly from the Yucatan to Flores next February, but wondered about the air fare?

If you want to enjoy an outstanding jungle, birdlife, wildlife and visit some off the beaten path ancient Mayan cities my advice would be to visit the Petexbatun Lagoon. This lagoon is located in the southwestern part of Peten (Guatemala). You would have to arrive first to Sayaxche, around 1 hour by car from Santa Elena/Flores. Then travel by boat through a jungle river for 1 hour, in the dry season you would watch alligators at the shores of the river. If your budget would allow petting yourself a little, my advice would be to lodge at the Chiminos Island Lodge, were you would enjoy the best food and luxury mahogany cabins I have seen.
