We are Canadian and have booked it through Sunquest Vacations. It is on Flamingo Beach in Nuevo Vallarta, which they say is 20min from the airport and 35 from downtown PV.<BR>I hope it's a good spot. I know the RIU chain has a great rep and we got this for a terrific price as it's just opening in May.

What I love about Puerto Vallarta is anything & most EVERYthing in El Centro & Old Town neighborhoods. The lovely local people, eating breakfast out, street food stalls, the smells, the traffic, sunsets with Mariachi bands playing at Playa Los Muertos, riding a local bus, the cobblestone streets, red tile roofs, black wrought iron trims, bouganvilla vines, strolling the Malecon in the evenings, sitting in the cathedral, eating corn on the cob grilled on the corner, walking over the suspension bridge behind the supermercado, delicious fresh orange, carrot or grapefruit juice from the nice lady on Basilo Badillo near Olas Altas, hot dogs from d'Mikes.<BR><BR>Well that's not exactly an answer to your "sights worth seeing" question, but it is an answer to what i LOVE about PV.

No, that is a great answer. <BR>Are the street vendors safe to eat from? Will it be fine to buy my son an ice cream or should I stick to the AI resort food?

Just keep your eye out for cleanliness. Don't go AI!! There are literally hundreds of restaurants of all sizes to choose from in PV. Do go to the site that has been suggested to you. Some of the most marvelous "street food" to be found anywhere!! Have a great time and make sure you get to the south side of town!!

Far be it from me to guarantee anything in this world (!) but personally I find the concept of an A-I buffet far scarier than a local restaurant or busy street vendor!<BR><BR>Problems with food often arise in the handling of it rather that the food itself (sitting around, reheating, poor refrigeration). Food at the street stalls moves fast! Don't eat in an empty restaurant or let someone throw cooked chicken back on the grille to rewarm at the end of an evening.<BR><BR>For ice cream there are regular shops, just like in the States, called Dolphy's, Bing's, and also Baskin Robbins. Also you'll find fruit ices (popsicles) in the corner stores.

"Eden" A jungle playground with a river and natural pools to jump into. An open palapa over looking the water where you can sip on margaritas & enjoy great food. This area is where Predater was filmed, you can see the helicpoter! This is a beatifully set up area to enjoy. It is south of town and into the jugle aways.

The grocery stores: Rizo's in old town south of the river and/or Giagante in the hotel zone. Also try the bakeries!

I love Mexican ice cream shops! My favourite flavours are cajeta (I like anything cajeta - it's like a caramel) and coconut. Sometimes they'll have really unusual flavours. Last year in Morelia, we stopped at a place which gave us little samples to try before we bought our cones or dishes of ice cream. Totally delicious!

Everybody has it right, PV has lots to do and every minute is interesting and fun. Don't be afraid to explore, if you don't mind walking you can cover most of el centro on foot. Food has never been a problem for us, nor the water. Any of the street vendors on the Malecon offer terrific treats from cotton candy, fruit, veggies. The people are fantastic. If time allows, travel up to Punta de Mita 18 pesos per person each way on the bus. or go to Guayabitos from the bus terminal 55 pesos per pers each way. Yelapa, Los Arcos, Los Animas, booze cruises. Marigalantas (Pirate ship) are all great trips and don't forget to attend a Mexican Fiesta.

I loved Puerto Vallarta! You must take the sail boat cruise to Yelapa. It is an indian village only accessible by boat. It took us about 1 to 2 hours (can't remember) to get there. It was awesome! There were waterfalls, snorkling, a wonderful, authentic lunch made by the villagers and a small group. Ask your hotel about a package. On the otherhand, be warned about the horseback riding in the Mexican village. The bus ride seemed to take forever and when we got there we learned that our horseback riding excursion involved about 40 other people. Although, it was beautiful it was crazy with that many people. The horses walked the whole way and they were kicking eachother constantly. The lunch that came with the tour was aweful. Not worth it. It took a whole day. All in all, go to YELAPA!!

definitely eat at Le Gourmet, which is the restaurant at hotel posada rio cuale. the food was absolutely amazing, and the wait staff was very friendly. if you go for dinner, they prepare your meal in front of your table. another tip -- order the flan.
