Spent 5 wks in Buenos Aires: Suggestions need for a new destination in AR
We spent 5 wonderful weeks exploring Buenos Aires. We just returned last week. Our only problem was the unusually cold weather, so we were told by locals. We plan a Spring or Autumn trip in 2008. Our plans include 2 weeks in BA again (different part of town) and three to four weeks in another city. Any suggestions where we should spend that chunk of time? We would like a place where we can manage on public transport, visit museums, walk a great deal, explore neighborhoods, great restaurants, and hopefully have the wonderful smoking bans we found in BA. Anyone have some ideas for us? Thanks

Hi
It was quite warm today and supposed to be 80 tomorrow
I have been sort of down about how cold it was until someone told us that it is very unusual..as was the snow. But spring seems to be here and it is so comfortable out now..
What part of town were you in? do you need BA suggestions or just out of town?
I hear that the smoking bans do not extend outside of the city of Buenos Aires..

Hi Scarlett,
It certainly was cold during our trip from late mid-July until the end of August. We had to buy hats, scarves, and gloves. We had been told that the weather was similar to Southern California's winters. No way or at least not this past Summer! (I did get to buy some wonderful hand knitted scarves, though I probably won't wear them much here in Southern California.) We were lucky on the other hand, that we only had one day of serious rain, so I suppose I should not complain too much, but our next trip as you can see from my query above will be in Spring or Autumn.
By the way, we tried that wonderful little French restaurant on Junin that you recommended. The owner told us that you came in frequently, so I wrote you an hello from Fodor's. Did you ever the note?
I loved watching the dogs in BA with their lovely little coats. It never bored me.I took dozens of photos with and without their owners. Everybody was so happy to oblige.I have never seen such enthusiastic dog owners anywhere. So tell me, do the dog walkers, the ones with the 8-10 dogs huddled together keep the dogs out all day? It looked like an all day outing to me. It was amazing to see the dogs walking quietly in a group with one in lead of course; some of the dogs were not on leashes, although most were of course , but they, the leashless ones, would stay obediently with the group. Never did I see one aggressive, hostile dog in BA and few barkers, too.
We stayed in Palermo, on Soler between Coronel Dias and Bulnes, about 5 blocks from the Bulnes Subte station. We liked the area. There were lots of nice restaurants near by, good shopping on Santa Fe and very convenient bus and subte stops.
I had not thought about asking for suggestions for another area of BA to stay in, but that would be great to have some ideas. Thank you And now I can visualize the streets and neighborhoods.
My husband really loved the no smoking bans in restaurants, especially since the cold weather would have made it too uncomfortable to sit outside. It is diappointing that the non-smoking bans are not outside of BA. We noticed smoking in Tigre. We were hoping to find a mid-sized city in AR to explore for a month, rent an apartment again (need web site ideas, anyone!) and have a leisured holiday. Again if anyone has some ideas for a second city in AR that we can explore for a month, we would love to hear about it.

Hi
We were just at Granda Bistro last night with friends.
Ricardo did not mention a note, so I am glad I read about it here
The dog walkers, from what I have seen..take the dogs to a park, tie them one or two together to a tree and then the walker goes to chat with the other walkers and the poor dogs stand or lie there, barking at each other.
Not what I ever plan to do with Pup.
I especially like the guys who walk all tiny dogs, a passle of toy poodles..( they all wanted to attack and kill poor Pup..who was so shocked that those little fluffy things barked that he could only stand there in amazement)..
I like the blonde guy who walks only Great Danes .. with hair similar to his in color
I have to take the camera out one day and just take pictures of dog walkers lol.
You will also see a uniformed maid walking the employers dogs..they just slowly stroll along, little pup sniffing and happy to be out, maid also happy to be out
Pup has to deal with just us..although today I think he would prefer not to be so well walked..He is exhausted, as we are, from walking from our rental apt..all over Recoleta..it is very warm today.
I have not made any out of town trips..I am no help in that..but anything to do with town, I will try my best .. although by the time you come back, I should have taken at least a couple of trips away from the city.
ciao!!

Have you considered Punta del Este, Mendoza or Salta? I only know what I have read and what friends tell me but they are on our list of places to go when we are settled into our new home and have a dog sitter.
Also..if you stayed in Palermo..I guess Recoleta would be good..The wonderful Belle Artes Museum is here, the neighborhoods are atmospheric and old wordly and posh and wonderful, depending on the street you are walking on.
The shopping is good, the food is good and it is easy to get around..
Have any towns outside of BA caught your attention?

Hi Scarlett,
Thinking of Mendoza, Salta, or Cordoba, but wonder now about how these places would work for my husband without there being a no smoking policy in the restaurants. The smoke really bothers my husband and eating out in Argentina is a real delight, so it may be back to BA (No hardship!)or lots of outdoor restaurants, which may work in Spring or Autumn.
We are thinking about Recoleta or another area in Palermo. There's a lot of BA (luckily) to explore and revisit. PS I can't believe how warm it is there since we left less than 2 wks ago. When we went to the airport we were bundled up in heavy coats and scarves. BA must be a totally different place now with the sidealk cafes filled with people and the bare trees budding and greening the streets. We must return in the Spring or Autumn.

Yes, Spring is beginning very nicely..it was quite warm, cooled off with a some rain but that just watered all the new flowers and budding trees.
I look forward to the Jacarandas in bloom, omg, talk about Purple Haze! We were never here when things were in full bloom or summer green, so it is yet another treat to look forward to ..
Well, you can make an entirely different vacation based here but doing sidetrips..
I found out about the flea market in San Isidro and look forward to that..just a short train ride away.
I hear smoking is just as bad as the Old days in areas outside of the city...

For those who can read Spanish. I just about can, well barely. It appears that Mendoza has banned smoking in restaurants along with a few other places.
