Short trip---need advice on where to stay, what to do...
I want to take my wife to a nice beach-side place to stay for her 60th birthday. She LOVES the water and the ocean. I don't so much. But it is her birthday, not mine, and I want to do something that she would love. I would like input on a great place to stay, beach side, and just a wonderful few days with my wife. Dates are October 29th thru Nov. 2nd. Price range for lodging is about $150 to $250 per night. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

My wife is also a beach/water lover, and her favorite place in the world is the stretch of beaches and towns between Puerto Morales and Tulum on the Mexican Caribbean.
Tulum is somewhat remote, with miles and miles of white sand beach, and fairly rough surf. Lots of small cabins and hotels along the beach, but very low key.
Akumal is a quiet enclave of condos and small hotels on a series of calm, protected bays. Great for snorkelling right from the beach.
Playa del Carmen is a small, very lively city right on a beautiful beach. Lots of Europeans, lots of dining, nightlife, no high rises.
Puerto Morales still feels like a fishing village - a little funky, but safe, with a long stretch of white sand beach.
We usually go for a week, and break up our trip between two of the above towns. Have you been to locogingo.com ?
