renting a cell phone
I am going to a language school in CR for 2 weeks in Feb. and my family wants me to rent an international cell phone to be able to call home. Has anyone ever done this and could advise me? How do you go about doing it? Is it expensive?

Rather than rent a cell phone...why not just get an International calling card? They are easy to use, cost less and can be bought in many of the grocery stores in CR. Or, buy them somewhere like Wal-Mart.

You'll probably be doing a homestay. The AT&T cards are just great because if you run out of minutes you can call from wherever you are and add more with your credit card. Each minute of calling time from Costa Rica uses up about 5 minutes of card time. So you get about 50 minutes out of a 250 min. card. That translates to approx. 50 cents per minute. I don't think you can do it much cheaper.

Ah, you're going to have such a great experience there! The church is so beautiful, and do go visit Carlos who runs the little soda at the end of the block just down from CPI. Great place for lunch. Wonderful casados! Also, there are 2 internet cafes--one that looks more modern but you have to cross the street to get to it unless you are staying on that side of town (very busy highway). The other (almost directly opposite) is yellow, very small, but the owners are very friendly people. San Joaquin is a great little town! Enjoy! And don't forget to POST when you get back

Shillmac- Thanks for that information (it's nice to have a 'heads-up'). If you think of any other tips, let me know. I don't know anything about where I'm staying yet. I will surely post when I get home at the end of Feb. NR

Please say hello to Lorena from Jill and Jamie in Oklahoma. Also to Percy, if you meet him. I think he is helping with the tours now. Thanks and have a great time! I hope to have the opportunity to study again this coming summer or next. I continue to work on it at home in a variety of ways--progress is slow, but progress is progress!
